Ack, I want to hear more! One of those videos that you look at and go, cool it's an entire 5 minutes of Trekkie AND civil rights goodness -- then it's over in a blink. Should have been 15 minutes. Damn.

We really need to hear more about Tack-eh's "liberal" conversations with Roddenberry... My wife is a TNG fanatic (and Asian), so this might be the selling point I've been looking for to get her to watch the OG with me, which she doesn't consider serious enough scifi.

Also, on the subject of the "South" -- my family is from Florida/SC and I remember my mom freaking out because she worked in a building (circa 1988) with a colored's only bathroom. She had no idea that there were still relics of segregation in public places. I don't know how it survived THAT long, but when you live an hour away from the nearest grocery store, yet the manatee "preserve" (they didn't look very preserved, the majority of them covered from head to tail in propeller scars...) is less than five minutes away, you're bound to find things that escaped the flow of time. Trailers on blocks of cement, just resting on top of the white sand in a hurricane fuckland... How smart my ancestors were.

I've been there. This is also the location used for Star Trek TNG movie First Contact, natch.

When I first watched TNG, back in my youth, I didn't really think Riker was all that amazing. I mean, how can you compete with Picard, Data, Worf, etc? But when I rewatched the remastered release of the show recently, I realized . . . Riker is the biggest boss in the Star Trek universe, bar none. (And yes, that includes Kirk. I went there!)

I mean, of course he gets all the ladies, but he also plays the trombone, fights Klingons, eats Klingon food, arouses Klingon ladies, is a crack shot with a phaser, is an excellent tactician that thinks outside the box, knows several martial arts, is a master poker player, good at chess, and has a beard that makes Chuck Norris pale in comparison. (I FREAKING WENT THERE!)

Riker is glorious, and I am completely serious when I say that.

I'm a fan of both franchises. Hard to pick which is better; I tend to think that the peaks of Wars beat the peaks of Trek -- but not by much. The lowpoints of both are pretty awful. And Trek has the edge in sheer volume of at-par or better quality entertainment, even though I've only watched TOS, TNG, some of DS9, and the movies.

So to me acting like Wars fans vs Trekkies are like oil and water doesn't ring true, but it's still a funny video.

Remember the first Barclay episode of TNG dealing with Holo-addiction? They made the pretty clear implication that they do use the holodeck to act out sexual fantasies, they did seem to have a taboo on making holo-recreations of people they knew RL however. which, of course, Barclay did indulge in.

Of course it got somewhat more explicit after Roddenberry died and the producers decided to make humans in the 24th century a little bit more..human instead of the ultra superbeings who were paragons of virtue of Roddenberry's vision and the idea of "Vulcan Love Slave" was introduced among other things.

I still don't understand how Wheaton is relevant. He did an awful job acting an awful character on TNG and hasn't done anything remarkable since. I guess his main skill is convincing other people who actually have talent to let him hang out with them.

There are plenty of times the best and brightest in high school don't lead successful lives in RL. There are plenty of times where the class fuckup ends up being the wealthiest person in the city or state.

Success for most people is a matter of right place and right time. Hard work is the exception, not the rule especially in America. Your success has more to do with your parents than you these days.

Well, it IS just a preview, but I kinda see your point. But movies are fantasy. Big budget movies require big audiences, and one way to bring them (and me) in is to make movies like this. I, for one, enjoyed the hell out of the previous movie (think I'll watch it on BluRay right now), and I have no doubt I'll love this one.

Is character development really needed for characters we've known for over 45 years? Granted, new actors will portray them a little differently, and the reboot takes place earlier than TOS. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't find myself wanting for more character exposition after the last movie. Hell, I thought they did an awesome job of introducing each character and laying out their individual personalities and quirks.

My least favorite of all the Star Trek series was TNG. I dug it, but it would be at the bottom if I had to rank them. I dunno, too idealist and preachy, maybe. JFC, I think Picard referred to the Prime Directive at least once an episode. Some episodes just bored me to death. I wanted every episode to be Enterprise vs. the Borg. I much prefer Kirk kicking a Gorn's ass, or fighting alongside Abe Lincoln, or in pursuit of the Praetor's finest flagship, or battling Apollo or "General Trelane, Retired". TOS was often campy, but always fun, and that's how I prefer my Star Trek.

The movies have always been more about pew pew than thinking and talking, even the TNG ones. It's too bad, but this looks like good fun like the first one anyhow.

Come on folks, Star Trek lost its intellectual edge at the end of TNG. We want bohunks blowing stuff up now. That, or sensitive men playing ukuleles. One or the other.

That said, I like seeing Undersnatch in something else. He looks like he'll make an awesome bad guy in some other film.
