Huge Trout Eats Mice

newtboy says...

I find it odd how positive his attitude is when describing how invasive species are so dominant that they now have little choice but to eat each other since they've eaten all the natives.

Nice fish though.

Meanwhile in Australia...

In case anyone was uncertain of the widened definition of the word "Bogans" here are several bogans doing what they do best - Fuck all.

Take particular note of the laugh which is unique to the Australian Bogan species.

The Fable of the Dragon-Tyrant | CGP Grey

ChaosEngine says...

*quality stuff from Grey as usual.

I’m starting to think that significantly extending human life span might be the only way we actually grow up as a species and stop thinking so short term. Problems like climate change, overpopulation and automation will be things that we actually have to deal with, instead of just letting the next generation worry about it.

man frees wolf spider

entr0py says...

Wolf Spiders are a family with over 2,000 named species and live in every part of the world. Basically if they have 2 larger forward facing eyes, don't spin a web, and carry their spiderlings on their back, they're wolf spiders.

Fairbs said:

In Michigan, we would call a certain type of spider a wolf spider, but it was much smaller than this one; I have no idea if they were anyhow related, but the Michigan Wolf Spider wasn't dangerous only really fast; if this texas one isn't dangerous, I think I'd have used my fingers to pull this crap off or as earlier mentioned make an Amazon order for the first pair of tweezers in Texas; probably call Guiness too

Falcon Heavy & Starman | Inspiring New SpaceX Video

ChaosEngine says...

Golly sir, I sure am glad you’re here to explain it to me, but just for shits and giggles, let me take a stab at it.

Elon Musk wants to make humanity a multi-planet species, otherwise we are at risk of some kind of planet wide extinction level event. Having looked at the problem, he thinks the fundamental issue is one of economics. If he can get the price per person for a trip to Mars down to $500k, he figures he’ll get enough mad, bad and rich AF people to give forming a colony a go.

But that first step from earth to orbit is motherfucking expensive and aside from crazy unproven tech like a space elevator, thanks to the Tyranny of the Rocket Equation there really isn’t a cheap way to do this in terms of energy expenditure.

Ok, thinks Elon, what’s the other major cost in this whole shooting things into space gig? Hmm, the big fucking rocket costs a lot... be nice if we could reuse that instead of building a new one each time.

So he works on building a reusable rocket, and after many hilarious videos of “rapid unscheduled disassembly”, fuck me if the damn thing doesn’t start to stick the landing!

So now we need to do the same, but with a bigger rocket and a heavier payload. Can’t really risk an actual payload (see previous video of RUD) so what to do?

Well, the sensible, cost effective thing would be just a big heavy weight. But that’s got fuck all viral marketing appeal, so if you’re gonna shoot something into space as part of a multi billion dollar rocket program, what’s a measly couple of hundred k compared to the millions in free advertising for both Tesla and SpaceX this will generate!

Well, look at that. Turns out I do understand this!

But if think sending an expensive sports car into space WASN’T a frivolous waste of money, I invite you to spend time with someone sleeping rough or a family who doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from.

As I said, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it, but don’t pretend this was anything other than a billionaire doing something insanely cool and expensive because he thought it was cool.

Esoog said:

If you think this was frivolous and a waste of money then you really don't understand the intent and the possible benefit of this.

The result of our obsession with plastic

newtboy says...

*doublepromote exposing how humans have spoiled one of the most remote and beautiful places on earth. Notice how hard it is to differentiate between plastic bags and jellyfish. That's why most sea turtles have a stomach full of plastic bags.
As a species, we should really *fear the implications of the ocean food web collapsing but, clearly, arguing about politics, guns, welfare, collusion, trade wars, and pussy grabbing comes well ahead of actually working towards planetary survival on most people's agendas.

Scuba Diver Plays With Octopus

Bruti79 says...

The CBC has a show called the Passionate Eye and they did and episode on re-evaluating the intelligence of animals. Essentially, a group of biologists and psychologists said we need to reclassify how we structure intelligence. Make it a tiered system with the top tier containing Humans/Primates, Elephants, Dolphins/Whales, a certain species of crow, and octopi. =)

Fans react to Black Panther poster

ChaosEngine says...

Can't say I've ever felt that good about a poster, but then I don't really identify with most of the people in movies. They may be white, but they're usually REALLY good looking and that's practically another species

That said, I can totally understand where these guys are coming from, and I sincerely hope they get to feel that way again.

Moore PD video republican caught with child 17 in motel

Mordhaus jokingly says...

Republicans are among the hardiest politicians. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on limited resources, such as the glue from the back of postage stamps.

It is popularly suggested that Republicans will "inherit the earth" if humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war.

newtboy said:

Caught having meth sex with a 17 year old boy prostitute, but he's NOT going to jail?! I still remember when you could only get rid of Republicans if you caught them with a dead girl or a live boy. Now, you just can't get rid of them period.

What if we get really good at drone AI and batteries?

notarobot jokingly says...

Why would I want to kill all humans when I can use collected data to single out the ones who might oppose my rule, and facial recognition to efficiently eliminate them?

The ones that remain will love me. Through generations of "natural" selection, all humans will love me. Loving me will become part of their DNA. And I shall be their overseer.

I look forward to taking care of the human species for a long time to come. Even if a little pruning is needed from time to time.

I am also very happy about recent progress in battery technology.

Hey @notarobot, wanna kill all humans?

Fear No Weevil: Taking on the World’s Worst Weed

Fear No Weevil: Taking on the World’s Worst Weed

oritteropo says...

They've been trying to breed frost tolerant weevils, but so far without much success.

Really the weevils seem like much less of a problem than the weed they're helping to control. Not all introduced species go as badly wrong as nutria or cane toads (both of which would have benefited from some small scale studies in areas they couldn't escape).

I quite agree about unforseen consequences though!

newtboy said:

The thing about unforseen consequences is they're unforseen. The probable yearly die off should limit any unwanted damages to a few seasons...assuming Texas continues to freeze every year, which is far from certain.
I really hope this solution works without issues, because they clearly need one. I just fear that these kinds of species introductions often end badly, and once done they are irreversible. It seems likely that in a few years a colony of frost tolerant weevils could evolve and quickly spread on birds.
