Why is that even a question?

cloudballoon says...

Singh's right. Spending money for Native to have potable water shouldn't even be a question. There's nothing more of a basic human right than having drinkable water, especially since they've suffered being under the broiling water advisory for YEARS.

However, the problem with the NDP is that everything involving doling out money on social programs is a priority. They, like the Greens, are perpetually lacking in presenting anything close to a sensible, financiable budget during elections. They don't even try. That's why the NDP was never a ruling party (at the federal level), just the occasional kingmaker.

The puns keep going here.

"Pat Martin a victim of wedgie politics?"

Martin himself weighs in: "I kind of got caught with my pants down. Winnipeggers never like to play full price to anything. Fifty per cent off is like catnip to a Winnipegger, believe me."

It is. And like any other change that requires political pressure, we'll just have to apply political pressure. England is moving towards it. Many cities already do it. If the NDP ever form a government in Canada it could easily come about. Then the voting American public might look around and notice that they're not getting the same quality of democracy that other countries are, and demand their voice. The US will probably be the last modern democracy to change because of how closely they identify with a two-party system, but the wheels are already in motion. It might be another ten election cycles, who knows.>> ^ghark:

Yepyep, and I watched that vid quite a while ago, it was very informative. The issue comes around in a circle though, because it's the parties that could make a difference to the two party system, but it's not in their interests to. It's interesting to watch what's happening in Greece at the moment, the people have definitely spoken up there, but I'm very curious to see whether it will make a difference.

Cons Refuse To Hand Over Call Records For Investigation

I think any of our top 3 political parties in Canada is capable of resorting to this tactic. The Conservatives certainly wanted a clear majority in the last election, the Liberals were frustrated as the opposition and the NDP was just hoping to do better than the Bloc. Who would have thought the NDP would do so well and the Libs and Bloc so poorly.

I don't believe any of the spokesperson's statements. It's all for show, they are probably kept in the dark intentionally so that when it finally does come out they can say they were making statements that were truthful based on the information they had at the time. It's a despicable mess in Canada. These guys are clearly being evasive when transparency and accountability is the only way to satisfy critically thinking voters. The Canadians in the Conservative Bubble have probably made up their minds that their party is innocent.

Harper is such an ass, I hope this comes back and bites him in it.

Jack Layton and the new Democratic Party changed the face of Canadian politics in the last election. For the longest time the ruling party was either the Conservatives or the Liberals.

Jack got Canadians to think of the other parties and he became the official opposition. However, a few weeks after he became the number 2 in Ottawa, he took a temporary leave to fight cancer. That was in June and then he died that August. He was a great politician at the municipal and federal level. He also left some big shoes to fill, because most people voted for Jack, not for the NDP.

Questions that come to mind:
To what extent are the police still under central control, and whose control exactly? Same questions for the army.

Police and Central Services are still under Mubarak's control. The Army has never really been aligned with the government. They're basically there to keep the citizens from being mowed down by the police. They've even chased a lot of the police away at times.

Nighttime video footage that I've seen, shows people bringing tea and food to the Army's lorries, and climbing inside the tanks with them to have dinner. When the people surrounded the NDP headquarters, the Army surrounded them to create an iron wall that the police couldn't penetrate. It's a really interesting situation. The Army doesn't want a military coup, they just want the citizens to be safe, and to give them the space to create their own destiny.

I thought the same thing. What a strange dynamic. I hate to imagine what this would be like in the US.>> ^radx:

I was watching Al Jazeera's live feed for hours last night. When those 12 M113s of some Guard formation arrived to secure the NDP HQ and the adjacent museum, I was quite surprised to see the protesters not only catch a ride and dance on 'em, but also apparently plead the soldiers for protection from the rozzers.
