Maru In Slow Motion

Rush - The Trees

Fusionaut says...

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There was trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

Building a Cello

schmawy says...

Since you're so curious, Schmawy, it's called "free plate tuning", and it was developed by the recently departed Carleen Hutchins...

Carleen Maley Hutchins (May 24, 1911 – August 7, 2009) was an American former high school science teacher, violinmaker and researcher, best-known for her creation, in the 1950s/60s, of a family of eight proportionally-sized violins now known as the violin octet (e.g., the vertical viola) and for a considerable body of research into the acoustics of violins. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Hutchins’s greatest innovation, still used by many violinmakers, was a technique known as free-plate tuning. When not attached to a violin, the top and back are called free plates. Her technique gives makers a precise way to refine these plates before a violin is assembled.

From 2002 to 2003, Hutchins’s octet was the subject of an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Titled “The New Violin Family: Augmenting the String Section.” Hutchins was the founder of the New Violin Family Association[1], creator-in-chief of the Violin Octet, author of more than 100 technical publications, editor of two volumes of collected papers in violin acoustics, four grants from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music, recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships, an Honorary Fellowship from the Acoustical Society of America, and four honorary doctorates. In 1963, Hutchins co-founded the Catgut Acoustical Society, which develops scientific insights into the construction of new and conventional instruments of the violin family.

The Hutchins Consort, named after Hutchins, is a California ensemble featuring all eight instruments.[2]

In 1974, Hutchins and Daniel W. Haines, using materials supplied by the Hercules Materials Company, Inc. (Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory) of Cumberland, Maryland, developed a graphite-epoxy composite top that was determined to be a successful alternative to the traditional use of spruce for the violin belly.[3]

To Ban... Or Not To Ban... westy (User Poll by Fjnbk)

imstellar28 says...

All disrespect is fundamentally equivalent in that it falls under the category of "disrespect" just like dogwoods, pine trees, oak trees, and maple trees all fall under the category of "trees" despite being different manifestations of the same thing.

The problem with "black people are monkeys" is that it is disrespectful
The problem with "everyone who eats at mcdonalds is a fatass" is that it is disrespectful
The problem with "fuck all of yall" is that it is disrespectful.

All of them are different yet all of them can be labeled disrespect.

hard concept?

Smoking Lettuce...A Moment of Zen on the Daily Show

djhenyo says...

The main cause of all cancers caused by smoke, whether it be tobacco or opium, is not some secret chemical contained only in mass in a single species (like nicotine for tobacco, morphine for opium, and thc for MJ) but rather it is the main body of smoke. This may come from ANY species in the plantea kingodom.

The burning of any kind of cellulose (the material that makes up the cell wall of almost every cell in every plant ever) creates a tremendous amount of tar and other carcinogeons which will inhabit the smoke of ANY plant you ever try to roll up (like maple leaf or lawn grass). Everything said by the expert is totally accurate and everything said by MSNBullshitBC as fake as the last girl I fucked. Peace

I just saw this at the HotDocs festival here in Toronto yesterday. Very powerful & shocking story, again showing how collectively humans are killing the planet.

The director said last night they've been picked up for distribution by Maple Pictures - keep an eye out in late summer/early autumn for screenings. This one is a must-see film.
