What Homosexuality Is Not
I would disagree with one thing they said as it may be sooner or later true. I know it VERY MUCH ISN'T real or that it even exists right now, but it will only be a matter of time most likely--so they may have jumped the gun a bit on that comment (they should have said, "There is no test to see if your genetic structure makes you more inclined to be attracted to males, RIGHT NOW."--that would have been far more correct. Homosexuality DOES have a source; since it occurs across the entirety of the animal kingdom you can basically safely assume that its cause is a genetic trait (AND even if it was psychological, it would STILL be a genetic cause!).
So, YES, sooner or later there WILL BE a test for it. When this happens it's how we use this test that will make us a good people or horrific one (as I'm sure all of you can see how this per-knowledge could lead to huge issues--even worse what happens when people decide if they want a straight or gay baby...scary stuff indeed). I think we'll find as with most things we will use this ability to test for sexual preference (something tells me they may be linked to the same sequence, so we'll probably find both to be serious) it will have both good and bad reasons and applications (for all we know being straight may have certain co-morbidities and homosexuality will also again have its own independent list of co-morbidities...).
But for now, I'm glad there is absolutely no test... What an absolute Pandora's Box that will be!
Tyrion Lannister's Speech at the Battle (Game of Thrones)
I understand that there are time concerns with a televised series, but I felt like there was a lot in this battle/episode that I missed in comparison to the book.
I've read that George R. R. Martin is a fan of the Chinese historical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" (I'm a fan also), and to me it seems pretty clear that the Battle of the Blackwater was fairly strongly inspired by the Battle of Red Cliff (Chi Bi) from that book.
Both have a long lead-up to a known naval battle, led by very intelligent strategists (Tyrion in GoT, Zhuge Liang in RoTK) coming up with a strategy that involves clustering/connecting the boats with a chain/chains and then hitting them with fire. The nuances present in the telling of both of these battles in their respective books are great, and although I personally think that the GoT version was partially inspired by RoTK, Martin did a good job of putting his own spin on it and making it his own.
The TV version was still entertaining for me, but I kept on thinking about what was missing that makes the characters (particularly Tyrion) shine even more. It also seemed that everything happens so fast that it would likely be fairly confusing to viewers who haven't read the book also.
Anyone coming from a TV perspective only have a take on that? Or is anyone familiar with RoTK and see the shadows of it come through in Game of Thrones like I do?

This is not a comment on the curret video. Generally, however, I wonder why people consistently upload videos that will only run on You Tube. I'm not going to take the time to leave Videosift and log-in to You Tube to watch them; thus, they are a waste of my time. I loath these types of uploads.
Also, many videos are defective and will not run under any circumstances. The uploader must have known this from his/her own experience; so why suffer it upon us?
Have a bad day,
J.
No, it's just you. I watched it on the sift. Nice accusatory tone you've got going for you there.

We had a similar ride in Louisville, KY at Kentucky Kingdom (closed in 2010) although it was often broken and was removed in 2005. The Quake was the first of its kind from Vekoma (Waikiki Wave).
I rode it many times while it was still operating. It wasn't all that much fun, but our out of town guests always loved it.

The Quake looks much faster than this ride. The forces on the arms must be immense.
Dan Savage on the bible at High School Journalism convention
From a writer at the Stranger, who works for editor Dan Savage
http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2012/05/02/the-sermon-on-the-mount
Ah, that old "the Old Testament isn't Christian" trope that Dan is now being forced to push back against. I get it all the time in my weekly Slog Bible Study threads whenever I quote from the Old rather than the New. Well, to settle this thorny and persistent issue once and for all, let's go straight to the source, perhaps the most Jesusy scripture of them all, the Sermon on the Mount:
“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
“But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!
Those "laws of Moses" Jesus says he's come to accomplish not abolish? They're laid down in the Old Testament—mostly in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy—which by the way, explains their inclusion in the Christian Bible. That the laws and commandments of Leviticus are not broadly repeated in the Gospel of Mark or the Epistles of Paul should be no more surprising than the fact that they're not repeated in Kings or in Psalms. It would be redundant. They're all part of the same book.
I'd argue that those Christians who do not understand that the Old Testament has always been a fundamental part of Christian scripture, do not understand the doctrinal underpinning of their own religion. Indeed, there is more disagreement between various Christian denominations over which texts should properly be included in the New Testament than there is over which texts should be included in the Old.
And by the way, the "Old Testament" is not the Jewish Bible. We've got the Torah, the five books of Moses, as our holiest of texts. The Nevi'im and Ketuvim, in which the other books are compiled, are also taught and studied, but are separate texts.
One final observation. It does strike me that there is something vaguely anti-Semitic about this effort by some Christians to downplay the significance of the Old Testament within the Christian Bible, as if the Jewishness of it taints their religion. Well too fucking bad. Your religion is, at its core, a Jewish sect. Deal with it.
