How would you feel if there was a Jehovahs Witness hospital that didn't do blood transfusions? Or a Christian Science hospital that refused to do medical treatment?
Both of those are real world examples where people died.

There's a big bloody difference between "not equipped" and "unwilling". In a local area, there might be several smaller medical facilities, but finding two major care centres across the road from each other is pretty rare.

And it's a bit fucking rich to bring up false equivalencies when you just compared unavailability of potential life-saving medical treatment to someone whinging over not getting a big mac at kfc.

And here we come to strawman of all strawmen. The problem is NOT that a woman needs a "direct abortion", it's that she may a surgical procedure that kills the child inadvertently. And this isn't theoretical, women have died from this.

The fundamental point is that religion has no place in medicine. If a patient wishes to refuse certain treatments because of their beliefs, well, they're an idiot, but it's their choice to be an idiot.

But a hospital doesn't get to refuse treatment based on some bronze-age belief. If the treatment is legal in its jurisdiction and they have the capability to provide it, they must provide it. Businesses should not be allowed to refuse service on religious grounds ("I am religiously opposed to treating gay people or blacks!!")

If one doesn't agree with the work conditions in those hospitals, don't work there (just like any other job).

Businesses don't have to offer all services. It is the business' choice, not the customers, what services they offer. Each and every medical procedure is a different service. E.g., in Australia, most private hospitals and small public hospitals don't offer emergency care in any substantive way. So if you self present with an acute injury that they don't provide care for, they will initiate transfer to another hospital.

If the patients life is in danger, the hospital will stabilise the patient and await medical transfer to another facility. This happens in both private and public hospitals every day. E.g. in general, smaller public hospitals don't offer obstetrics. You will be transferred to a larger public hospital. In the event that the procedure must be done stat, then all hospitals will give their best effort (including religious hospitals) to save the patient. It is basically the same in the USA.

The problem, as always, comes back to basic economic inequality.

In real terms, average household income has been in decline for the past 35 years. As a result of this, most people can't afford to buy decent food.
So they buy fast food and processed crap. Even the staples they do buy, like chicken, have to be way cheaper than they should be to pay the farmer, and treat the birds properly.

In Germany they call KFC, Kentucky Schreit Ficken (my spelling may be off), which translates to, Kentucky Screams F***ing.

So... maybe it is appropriate material for the TV.

I grew up on a farm, and like many/most such kids, went through the experience of having "pet" chickens, pigs, and even a cow or two that ended up on our plates. I think that the key is to explain verbally that such animals are being raised to be food, and then using your best judgement about when they are ready to see something small get slaughtered and butchered.

For me, it was when I was about 6. We had an old rooster (we mostly had chickens for eggs, this fella was a 1-off), and I was a few feet away when my dad held it down and hacked off its head with a hatchet. Got to watch it run around headless, etc. Then I had to help (a little) in the plucking and processing. If you don't regularly do those things, you don't know the little tricks and they take FOREVER. We put way more hours and dollars of toil and effort into plucking, skinning, and preparing that old chicken than it would have cost to buy 10 whole rotisseried chickens from KFC or something. And he was too old to really provide good meat. BUT - I learned something and appreciated the food more, which was the point.

Later in life I was involved with the raising of pigs and cows for meat. I helped feed them every day, and then would help get them into a trailer and deliver them to the meat locker when it was time for them to be slaughtered and butchered. I didn't witness that in person, but I was old enough to fill in the gaps between putting that animal in the trailer and then eating a steak or pork chops a few days later. I think that if my parents had wanted me to have the experience of actually seeing the slaughter, the locker would have easily obliged. Not sure if the same would be true today.


OK, I've been rambling but I'll throw one more thing out there. Now I'm living in Thailand, where a lot of food is purchased in small farmer's market kinds of places, and some is slaughtered and prepared right in front of your very eyes. I love eating fresh Tilapia fish here (the "farm"-raised and frozen fish back in the US always tasted like algae to me, but the fish here don't have that taste at all) and they are alive in tanks when you order one at a market in Thailand. Within 45 seconds, they will pull out a fish of your selection, smack it on the head with a blunt instrument to kill it, rasp off the scales, gut it, put some slices into the sides for even cooking, and hand it to you in a bag to be cooked at home. Sometimes they flop around in the bag a bit (not alive, just muscles unwinding/relaxing) like a headless chicken. I think that will be a similar growing experience for my daughter that she'd be able to witness at a much earlier age. Then maybe when she's 5-6 like I was we'll watch a chicken get the axe.

I talked my way out of a ticket once by clearly demonstrating the cop was wrong. I told the cop - see my radar detector? You were using constant radar from before the time you came around that corner. Why would I speed past you if I knew you were using your radar before you even got on the same street as me?
