Steven Pinker on Mind/Brain Unity
@chilaxe
I have heard similar explanations and they still don't make sense to me. Mostly because it doesn't jive with how we experience reality. It is like saying 2 different radio stations broadcasting 2 different signals at 2 different frequencies are one radio station. Or, to put in back in the Brain; the Eye and Smell system never "touch" in your brain, but still form a mind where they are touching. What, where, why and how are the 2 signals being interpolated as one? The thing that is doing that is what we call mind...what, where, why, and how still haven't had a convincing explanation...to me at least.

Strange how a lot of the frames morph together like this was just a collection of individual photos blended together using semi-intelligent edge detection, as opposed to using, say, oh I dunno, A VIDEO CAMERA...?
Use of a cheap video camera explains why this slo-mo has big fail all over it. The camera man did absolutely nothing recommended in this guide to help the time remapping/frame interpolation filter in After Effects get a super slo-mo result. Also recommended practice is individual tuning of motion sensitivity when using such plug-ins.
If you want to see what a good frame interpolation plug-in can achieve slowing down regular video, type "Twixtor" into the search bar of your favorite video sharing site.
Holy crap dude. That's WAY too much analysis over a corgi in slow motion video.
It's a good explanation buried in basement-dweller cynicism.

Rod Blagojevich arrested a day after standing up to B of A
@dystopianfuturetoday I noticed a typo in the description, Blagojevich's arrest was on 12/9/2008, not 12/9/2010. You are right this video is from the day before his arrest.
I really can't buy the idea that Bank of America pulled strings to get him arrested, the FBI had been investigating and preparing a case against Blagojevich for 3 YEARS, it's not like they literally threw the charges together overnight.
And the Interpol arrest warrant against Julian Assange was issued on 11/20/2010, 9 days BEFORE Assange's interview with Forbes that lead to all of the speculation about the info he has against Bank of America. So they couldn't have been responsible for the warrant, or obviously for Julian's choice to surrender voluntarily to police custody.
I wouldn't be surprised if both Assange and Blagojevich pissed Bank of America right the hell off. But the dates of their arrest don't even quite rise to the level of coincidence. And motive alone would still be a poor reason to think that B of A was responsible. I'm sure they both have a vast list of enemies, as most politically important figures do.
Julian Assange's first post-bail interview
@kymbos You don't spend the rest of your life in jail for 'consensual rape' (my summary from what I have gathered, and I have attempted to read up on this, the case essentially boils down to consensual sex followed by sort of sort of non-consensual sex (whether a 'no' was uttered by the woman at any time is for instance unclear)). So I assume you are mixing up the rape case and the american wikileaks scandal.
Can you provide any proof that the Americans have *anything* to do with the Swedish rape case, anything at all. Because as I have said I have kept with much of the reporting, and from what I have seen all info on possible American involvement is pure conjecture. To be clear, my personal opinion is that the Swedish activities are in no way influenced by Wikileaks fallout, not just because there is no hard evidence but just because it seems like a silly conspiracy theory to me (smearing somebody with a fake rape plot: Good plan, smearing somebody with some weird sex by surprise plot: Stupid plan)
Regarding the publicity regarding the rape case. Yes, it is a shame that this gets so much coverage yet may have no substance, and it seems very possible that the offenses if they did occur are relatively minor. Like *any* celebrity, his personal life is under a magnifying glass, and that is not fair (for any celebrity).
On the other hand, there are several things he could have done differently:
- When the charges were first brought forward, immediately take it up with the women, strife for resolvement. In what I've read, there is only mention of him having talks with the authorities, not the victims/ 'victims'. Especially after the case was first dropped presented a great opportunity to at least attempt to fix misunderstandings.
- During the many interviews he has given, go into detail on what happened during those nights from his perspective, including the actual sexual activity and condom usage. Give the full side of his side of the story.
- As soon as it became clear that Swedish authorities wanted him back, go back to Sweden. He landed on an Interpol list (must have known this if he googled his name daily) yet did nothing!
All of these things I would have done differently from how he tackled them. Yes, it is very possible that his lawyers advised against any of these things, but you are not required to listen to your lawyers...
Super Deep Mandelbrot Zoom
The final magnification is 2.1x10^275 (or 2^915). I believe that this is the deepest zoom animation of the Mandelbrot set produced to date (January 2010).
Each frame was individually rendered at 640x480 resolution and strung together at 30 frames per second. No frame interpolation was used. All images were lovingly rendered by 12 CPU cores running 24/7 for 6 months.

Criminal Arrest Warrant Issued For Dick Cheney in Nigeria
Nigeria IS a member state of Interpol. It wouldn't do anything, but it would be entertaining to see them try to issue an international warrant for his arrest and extradition. Failing that, I hear extraordinary rendition is pretty kosher now.

Unlimited Detail: Potential Next-Gen Graphics Technology?
>> ^darkpaw02:
And the issue of "unlimited" detail = "unlimited" memory requirements isn't quite right, have a look at some of the 64K demos from the PC demo scene. The example of the billions of animals stacked in pyramids is the answer to that one, it might be a few meg for the first animal, the rest are just extra entries in an index pointing back to the first one.
I'm not sure which way you intend your example here...-Polygons- supply that "few extra entries in an index" property...using point clouds, not so much. Yes, you could presumably create exact duplicates of objects by recording a displacement for a cloud, but you get exactly the same ability with polygons, and the objects are vastly smaller in memory footprint. IOW, duplicating an object is -not- increasing the number of details. Details only have a cost in -any- approach if they're unique.
A point cloud first requires you to determine a maximum zoom, i.e. how close to the object are you going to be allowed to move the camera. Then you must specify enough individual points to provide a seamless view of the object. If you then move closer, your object falls apart into dissociated points. That's inherent in the very definition of a point cloud, after all. With polygons, you can interpolate between your vertices for any level of zoom...and the only flaw is an increasingly pixelated image.
Honestly, if points are so vastly superior, you can use polygons as points too...for a simple three-fold increase in memory. That would make it pretty trivial to prove his concept...but he isn't offering that proof. If memory serves (I'm not listening to the whole thing again), he's looking for investors. Proof is not an unreasonable requirement in this case. If he's being honest, a demo at one of the big conferences (as opposed to an unbelievable video clip on youtube) would net him all the funds he could need.
I still believe it smells exactly like the Phantom.
2 Live Crew - Fuck Martinez
From Wikipedia:
As Nasty As They Wanna Be and "Me So Horny" controversy
The group released their album As Nasty As They Wanna Be in 1989, which also became the group's most successful album, largely because of the single "Me So Horny", which was popular in spite of little radio rotation, thanks, in part, to prevalent play on MTV. The song was based on a quote from a Vietnamese prostitute in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and took a sample from Mass Production's Firecracker. This album was also produced by Mr. Mixx.
The American Family Association did not think the presence of a "Parental Advisory" sticker was enough to adequately warn listeners of what was inside the case. Jack Thompson, a lawyer affiliated with the AFA, met with Florida Governor Bob Martinez and convinced him to look into the album to see if it met the legal classification of obscene. In 1990 action was taken at the local level and Nick Navarro, Broward County sheriff received a ruling from judge Mel Grossman that probable cause for obscenity violations existed.[2]
Navarro warned record store owners that selling the album may be prosecutable. 2 Live Crew then filed a suit against Navarro. That June, Judge Jose Gonzalez ruled against the album, declaring it obscene and illegal to sell. Charles Freeman, a local retailer, was arrested two days later, after selling a copy to an undercover police officer. This was followed by the arrest of three members of 2 Live Crew after they performed some material from the album at a live performance held at the Futura Night Club in Hollywood Florida. They were acquitted soon after. In 1992, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit overturned the obscenity ruling from Jose Gonzales, and the Supreme Court of the United States refused to hear Broward County's appeal. A notable feature of the case was the distinguished literary critic and now Harvard University professor, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. as an expert witness on behalf of the defendants. He argued that the material that the county alleged was profane, actually had important roots in African-American vernacular, games, and literary traditions and should be protected.
As a result of the controversy, As Nasty As They Wanna Be sold over two million copies. It peaked at #29 on The Billboard 200 and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A few other retailers were later arrested for selling it as well. Later hard rock band Van Halen sued over an uncleared sample of their song "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" in the 2 Live Crew Song "The Fuck Shop". The publicity then continued when George Lucas, owner of the Star Wars universe, successfully sued Campbell for appropriating the name "Skywalker" for his record label, Luke Skywalker Records. Campbell changed his stage name to Luke (and changed the record label's name to Luke Records) and the group released an extremely political follow up album, Banned in the USA after obtaining permission to use an interpolation of Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. 2 Live Crew paraphernalia with the Luke Skywalker or Skywalker logos are usually sought after as collector's items.
Interpol "C'mere"

It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves
The trouble is that you're in love with someone else
It should be me
It should be me
Your sacred parts, your getaways
You come along on summer days
Tenderly
Tastefully
And so may we make time
To try find somebody else
This place is mine
You said today, you know exactly how I feel
I had my doubts, little girl, I'm in love with something real
It could be me that's changing
And so may we make time
To try and find somebody else who has a line
Now seasoned with health
Two lovers walk a lakeside mile
Try pleasing with stealth, rodeo
See what stands long ending fast
Oh how I love you in the evenings
When we are sleeping
We are sleeping
Oh you are sleeping
And so may we make time
To try and find somebody else who has a line
Now seasoned with health
Two lovers walk a lakeside mile
Try pleasing with stealth, rodeo
See what stands long, oh ending fast

Dictionary helps crack case of notorious Polish serial offender
HE WAS one of Ireland’s most reckless drivers, a serial offender who crossed the country wantonly piling up dozens of speeding fines and parking tickets while somehow managing to elude the law.
So effective was his modus operandi of giving a different address each time he was caught that by June 2007 there were more than 50 separate entries under his name, Prawo Jazdy, in the Garda Pulse system. And still not a single conviction.
In the end, the vital clue to his identity lay not with Interpol or the fingerprint database but in the pages of a Polish-English dictionary. Prawo jazdy means driving licence.
This is by the far the most awesome... even better when you see the driver's license.

Help me with my purchase of an HDTV, please (1sttube Talk Post)
We have a Samsung. I could not recommend them more. The have linear interpolation for low quality signals, which helps with the graininess of the non HD channels. They are significantly less than Sony, and we still think ours has a better picture. They typically have computer hookups so you can watch stuff off your computer.
Plasmas have a truer black, but if you want to watch TV without the blinds closed get an LCD.
No service provides information in greater than 720 dpi, but that may change. So go for 1080 dpi.
