Bach, Toccata and Fugue in d arranged for Timpani and Piano

timpani isn't a very well constructed instrument now that I think about it. 3rd world drums play a much clearer, louder, deeper sounds than these behemoths. These bulbous cauldrons sound way too flat to say the least.
Perhaps because western orchestra's always been about the strings and the winds, and not so much on the percussions.

This isn't an example of a good timpani sound, or a particularly wise orchestration. It looks like a college recital, performed by a student who is still learning, so I wouldn't base your judgment of this instrument on one video.

There are many cool sounding low pitched ethnic drums, but none of them allow you to tune to a particular pitch on the fly. If you look closely, you'll see the performer adjusting a pedal - which tightens or loosens the head - at the base of these drums. A nice set of drums, played by a skilled player will give you a huge, clear awesome sound.

I'd recommend you check out a good recording of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, Orff's Carmina Burana or Holst's Planets for a good idea of how Timpani are supposed to sound. You hear it quite a bit in film music too.

Percussion was underused in Western art music up until the 20th Century, so while most of the classical chestnuts only have a bit of perc here and there, you see quite a bit in music written over the last 100 years.

I arranged Bach's Passacaglia in Cm for Vibes, Marimba and Bass (with low C extention) for my junior recital, and it worked really well. I should dig that out and do it again somewhere.

Maddow: "GOP Platform is to Decrease American Workers Pay"

MaxWilder says...

I usually agree with Maddow. She's smart and compassionate. But she's off the mark here with her obvious unconditional support of the UAW. They are not the entire problem, but they are part of it, and perhaps a significant part.

But the biggest point of concern I have is that nobody seems to be talking about why they are failing. It's not the economy, otherwise the Japanese companies would be failing too. But they're profitable, and by many measurements they are the most reliable vehicles. So what is the real reason the Big 3 are failing? And will a cash infusion do anything to turn that around?

I say let them fail. Other companies will pick up the pieces and they'll have better chance at sustained profitability than these bloated behemoths. That's how capitalism is supposed to work, after all.

Around here with the price of gas down to $1.50 a gallon people have pulled out their land yatch's. Infact its rare I see a car anymore, so if people are too stupid to understand driving those behemoths was part of what caused the high prices in the first place, maybe they'll be stupid enough to start buying them in large masses again.

Girl beats dude in wrestling

rottenseed says...

I went to a high school with 2 female wrestlers. They were pretty too, nice slim physique, not total behemoths. Once you see it, you realize there's really nothing astonishing by it. Since most of wrestling is technique in take downs, counters, counter counters, counter counter counters, etc...the person with the better understanding and both physical and mental speed will often times prevail. I suppose before you've seen it, it could be surprising, though.

Mars Science Laboratory - Insane Descent Sequence

I was wondering why there were no solar panels on this behemoth so I did a little googling and discovered that they're going with a whole radioisotope decay thing. Plutonium: it's not just for breakfast anymore.

Michigan youth investigate how WalMart came to their small town

Whenever a Wal-Mart sprouts up, ma'n'pa shops get priced out of existence. Unable to compete with a corporate behemoth, thousands of privately- and locally-owned shops have gone belly-up in the wake.
Its sad, really.
As a side-note, Wal-mart is a big contributor to the Republican election war chest, while Costco tends to give more to Democrats.

Then people don't really put much value in mom and pop shops, its just the way of the world. In Europe and cali, people don't feel the same way and those shops exist with super stores in the area...just a matter of economics really.

This sounds like a great time to for some sock-puppetry! I'll swing in the complete opposite direction and be the most extreme, God-fearing and fundamentally cracked, delusional psychopath (all in the name of the Lord, of course!) I can and see if I get more positive or negative responses. Guess I'll be making more friends than you, friend! Christian stardom here I come!

Bill Maher and Michael Moore beg Ralph Nader not to run

RedSky says...

Watching this is dramatic irony at it's ... saddest.

It really is a pity that un-off elections or preferential voting systems are unlikely to appear because of the obvious control over the legislative ability the Republican/Democrat behemoth have. They know full well when people are afraid of their vote not counting for anything, minor parties will never gain traction. On the other hand it's perhaps even more tragic many Democrats-preferred Libertarian, Nader or other third party candidate supporters lack the power for forward thought or any kind of conceptualisation of the the effect their votes have.

Seems they'd rather be both powerless and ignorant.
