Here's an update. We're a twin engine plane running on a single engine. One of our two web servers is down at the moment, so we are half speed. Lucky may have located the problem though and we hope to have both engines running before peak time tomorrow - (or else this plane will crash spectacularly)

phew...I thought I was going to have to finally upgrade from my AOL with 14.4k modem.

Frak that, 300 speed modem and Apple 2!

Well my first post looks foolish since you all got so technical.

I know what HTML stands for! We just don't normally say it in polite company.

Iran Gov't Demands $3k Bullet Fee For Slain Protester Body

Yes, not working for me either. I'll try to find a replacement.

Edit - I found a couple of Hulu and Dailymotion clips that are titled the same way, but seem to be blocked in my region. If anyone can confirm they are a viable substitute, post the code and i'll replace it.

One thing about karaidl... he's got a pretty unique username. A google search indicates there's a matching aol screen name, so I'm guessing "karaidl" on aim is our long-lost buxom black man.

Passer-by Pushes Suicidal Man From Bridge (no one dies)

BEIJING (May 23) - Chen Fuchao, a man heavily in debt, had been contemplating suicide on a bridge in southern China for hours when a passer-by came up, shook his hand — and pushed him off the ledge.

Chen fell 26 feet onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion laid out by authorities and survived, suffering spine and elbow injuries, the official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday.

The passer-by, 66-year-old Lai Jiansheng, had been fed up with what he called Chen's "selfish activity," Xinhua said.

Traffic around the Haizhu bridge in the city of Guangzhou had been backed up for five hours and police had cordoned off the area.

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lai was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Xinhua said Lai was "taken away by police" but did not elaborate.

A police officer who answered the telephone Saturday at a station close to the bridge confirmed the incident and said it was under investigation. He refused to give any other details and hung up.

According to Xinhua, Chen wanted to kill himself because he had accrued $290,000 in debt from a failed construction project.

On Thursday, he made his way to the Haizhu bridge, where 11 other people have tried to take their lives since April.

Lai volunteered to talk Chen down but was turned away by police, Xinhua said. Lai then broke through the cordon, climbed to where Chen sat, greeted him with a handshake, then pushed.

Photos in the Beijing Morning Post showed Lai, shoeless and in a T-shirt, saluting after Chen fell.

The paper said Lai was released on bail Friday but did not give any details. It said he had been on medication for "a mental illness" for decades and had been on his way to a hospital for his pills.

Chen was recovering in the hospital, Xinhua said.

Who is your favorite long-lost sifter? (Sift Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

Fedquip was the one who indirectly dragged me into the World of Sift through his blog on AOL, so I will have to put him on top of my list. Snoozedoctor had a lot of good music sifts. And you can say a lot about Choggie, but I really miss all his quality artsy videos. I guess I will have to sift them myself now...

Otherwise, I haven't been a member long enough to get to know the vanished sifters through comments and conversation. Most of them disappeared before I joined.

Facebook as the Afterlife (Blog Entry by dag)

dotdude says...

People I went to school with and others I didn't, but knew, K-12 and college, are now on Facebook. They are scattered across the country. So, Facebook is a nice way of keeping up with them. Some of them I haven't seen since 1975, 1978, 1982 and 1987. There are certain ones who are very networked. So, once I one connect with one, then I connect with a bunch.

A few weeks back, one friend from elementary school, informed us he would be on "The Practice" and that we should look for him. He had only two lines. He's a casting director.

An update on Bebo, just so you are informed. AOL's AIM Profiles are now Bebo profiles. You may remember that AOL bought Bebo.

VideoSift Fundraiser (Sift Talk Post)

deputydog says...

MINK, come on. are you really suggesting that dag slaps all his accounting on the table for everyone to see?

if for some reason you don't trust his arithmetic, don't donate. he's not pointing a gun to your head. asking for donations is an uncomfortable thing to have to do and i'm certain that dag wasn't overjoyed when he realised he'd have to do this. there's no need to make the process any more shitty by asking to see an income and expenditure.

honestly, the fact that dag and lucky haven't managed to make shitloads of money from videosift is quite endearing. if they were making thousands per week i think the whole experience would be less intimate. that's not to say i don't want them to make shitloads of money btw. i'm just glad the site is run by people who obviously didn't start it with a financial masterplan only to sell the fucker to AOL a couple of years down the line.

ask for donations whenever you want.
