Home Schooling Now...

Long story short, I won't be on here very often anymore...but I'll cherish those rare moments!

Son needs me now.  Interesting experience, this whole homeschool thing.  Anyone else out there a homeschoolin' mamma/pappa?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

For some reason there is a disproportionately large percentage of homeschoolers on the Sift. (no TVs?)

We did it for a year and found it very challenging. I think organization and getting involved in a group are key.

Well as long as he can pass his proficiency tests for every grade, you could let him explore some outlets that interest him. Like electronics or art... just make sure he's not making pipe bombs.

I think the key to homeschooling is to not let them slow down. Honestly the reason that I homeschooled was because all they had was the regular class and remedial classes, neither one worked for me because I was far too bored learning stuff I was 4 years ahead of. Being able to learn at my own pace was amazing, I could finally concentrate and wasn't getting into trouble by distracting others. For young minds who crave knowledge, it's best to hit it full force. Good luck hope it works out for you and your son.

Hey! Wish I caught this when you first posted Are you new to homeschooling?

Laura, have you joined a support group? Do so. Its good resource for you and friends for your son.

I hope you don't live in Ca. Have you read the news about that? Depending on what state you're in, cover yourself legally. If you live an unfriendly homeschool state, I would recommend joining The Homeschool Legal Defense Association. They will provide legal help for free if you are ever harassed by school officials or social workers.

The other guys in the thread have great points. Learning at your child's own pace, whether it's slow or child prodigy ...something, is the best thing about this.

One thing you have to accept during the first year: You will come up with a plan of action... great! Now be prepared to scrap it about every month or so and make a new one until you find your way that works.

You're going to be able to fashion his curriculum to fit your child's needs. There are SO many different ways to homeschool too.

Good luck, enjoy and don't be a stranger now!

thanks swampgirl...
I am in NM. Very friendly. Support groups? Not very close. I would be warmly accepted in the few groups (CHESS, etc.) and be very comfortable if I were Christian. Though I was a Baptist missionary kid myself, I shy away from indoctrinating my children. We seem to be doing just fine...the most important things this has done so far are relieving his social stressors and showing him that he really doesn't know everything. Call me crazy, but I think I have gained some respect from a 12 y/o.
I'll try not to be a stranger...

More power to ya, home-schooling is an indication that you are ever vigilant and not lazy with regard to your child's education-by the time they have passed up the rest of the monkeys by 4-6 grades, you'll be ready for what ever college, university, or au privave ya see fit......your child will be!

Public School is a diseased entity, a tool for re-education and synaptic shut-down....parents should be given major tax breaks, grants, etc., should they choose to home-school-

Gorgonheaps' right, the child is stunted and the process malformed easily....home-schoolers should be aware as well.....
