The Great NBC Purge of 2008

In case some of you haven't noticed yet, all over the Intarwebs videos from NBC shows have been getting purged lately. Most noticeably, videos from Saturday Night Live have had the plug pulled on them on many major video hosts, and not just YouTube.

In the past 24 hours two SNL videos that I kept on my Dailymotion account were both sent to the gallows because of copyright claims by NBC. And just in the past week I've seen it happen to others at Metacafe, MySpace, YouTube (of course), and even Funny Or Die. I had never seen a video pulled from Funny Or Die for copyright infringement until this week, so the heat is on, brothers and sisters.

What to do about this? To start, you can go to NBC's video page to search for any videos you may have lost. (Sorry, sub-Gold members, but you'll have to get your Gold star before you can use this option.) However NBC's video library is nowhere near complete, so don't be surprised if you can't find a replacement there. The only other thing I can think of doing, if your video hasn't been yanked yet, is download it NOW. Then if it gets pulled, send the video to a sift buddy who can upload it to one of their video accounts.

I used to think Dailymotion was safe from the eyes of the copyright lawyers, which is why I used them for as long as I did. However to beat these stings these days I think we're going to need to set up accounts on small video host sites in cultural backwater countries, like Slovenia. (Just make sure kulpims has his computer turned on before you attempt to upload. )

Does anyone else have any ideas?
