Rebecca Black: A Music Industry Victim, Not a Music Criminal

I read this article on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/celebrity.news.gossip/03/18/rebecca.black.ppl/

I went from a general disgust of this young girl, to feeling bad for her. According to the article, Rebecca's mother paid $2,000 to Ark Music Factory for a package to showcase her daughter's talents. Good or bad, Rebecca doesn't deserve the backlash she received. She's not old enough to remember any "meaningful" music, any music she has heard has been pop culture drivel, and her life experiences haven't amounted to anything other than "what should I wear today?". On top of it, according to this article she didn't even write the song, it was forced upon her by Ark Music Factory.

According to CNN: The producers offered her two songs, and she settled on "Friday" because, she told the Daily Beast, "The other song was about adult love -- I haven't experienced that yet. 'Friday' is about hanging out with friends, having fun. I felt like it was my personality in that song."

The fact that she knew the other option for a song was something she had not experienced yet shows a bit of wisdom, in my view. So who are the real criminals here. Ark Music Factory? We can start there. First of all, any entity in the music industry with the name "Music Factory" (including C&C Music Factory) should be burned at the stake. The idea that music is a product and not an art should sicken us all, which is why a lot of people were so critical of Rebecca in the first place. All of that criticism was misplaced, in my opinion (including my own); even if she had written the song, the only thing there is to blame is the industry that raped music of its soul.

Many of you may be asking: "rottenseed, what the fuck happened to you? Are you getting soft? Why do you give a shit?" Well because she'll be 18 one day...and because I feel like this poor girl is more of a victim than a criminal.
