They REALLY wanted to get to Hong Kong

Hong Kong's Kai Tak airport was known for being one of the most dangerous airstrips in the world: planes had to fly over densely populated areas at low altitudes, then make a sharp 40 degree right turn at a 100 meter altitude to line up with the runway. Pilots also had to take into account frequent crosswinds and 6 story buildings and mountains lining one edge of the airstrip.

Many planes have not made successful landings at Kai Tak, as this Korean Airlines 747 was soon to find out.
