Runaway Train Montage

BSR says...

Gotta give it to the camera crew having to be out in that cold, windy, snowy weather and all that steel. Those engines are bad ass looking.

The Islands With Too Much Power

spawnflagger says...

Just ask some Cloud provider to put a datacenter on the island, and they can give them discounted kWh rates during the windy periods. Should be cheaper to run fibre for data to the mainland than the higher capacity power wires.

A Message from Alaskans (to Texas) on Wind Power

Louis opens new Macbook Air, immediately loses mind.

SFOGuy says...

Yah--he just wants to complain. If you open your attic window and the front door on a windy day---the house will ventilate. Air will move past...stuff in the house.

Lots of laptops around my house; the Apple stuff gives us the least problems.

Perfect? nope. But...still good enough.

rancor said:

In an enclosed space like a compact laptop (MacBook Air) you don't need the fan anywhere near the heatsink. Think about a long tube; you can put the fan anywhere in it and the total airflow will be about the same. I'm a bit surprised someone experienced with laptops doesn't know this?

It seems more like he just wanted to rail against Apple products. I've been there, but my rant is usually about the quality control of their hardware.

Bush fire goes from 1 to a 100 in a couple seconds

eric3579 says...

Seems Eucalyptus trees are made to create firestorms..

Fallen eucalyptus leaves create dense carpets of flammable material, and the trees' bark peels off in long streamers that drop to the ground, providing additional fuel that draws ground fires up into the leaves, creating massive, fast-spreading "crown fires" in the upper story of eucalyptus forests.

Additionally, the eucalyptus oil that gives the trees their characteristic spicy fragrance is a flammable oil: This oil, combined with leaf litter and peeling bark during periods of dry, windy weather, can turn a small ground fire into a terrifying, explosive firestorm in a matter of minutes. That's why eucalyptus trees — especially the blue gums (Eucalyptus globulus) that are common throughout New South Wales — are sometimes referred to wryly as "gasoline trees."

Eucalyptus do extremely well after fires. Fire and Eucalyptus make good partners it seems. https://wildfiretoday.com/2014/03/03/eucalyptus-and-fire/

Ooops

OverLord says...

Plus, it's fucking windy, what do you think will happen?

moonsammy said:

I... how can two people be so entirely useless? The total lack of any pre-planning (hose? bucket?). The way he just stood there watching as it started to spread to the trees. Aiming the extinguisher at the top of the fire. The woman filming and giving direction rather than doing, you know, anything at all. To stop the large fire. Right next to the building she's standing in.

High-tech drones steal the show at the Winter Olympics

SFOGuy says...

Well, watching events (snowboarding and downhill)---it has surely been windy---would have scrambled a drone show good and proper...

Full Frontal - No Country For Pregnant Women

ChaosEngine says...

I watched this the other day, and honestly, I thought they were a little hyperbolic.

"Sometimes the nearest hospital is over an hours drive away!"

er, yeah.... the USA is a big country.

Even in NZ, a country over 30 times smaller, the nearest big hospital can easily be over an hour away from a small rural town.

It seems really unreasonable to expect that someone who lives up a windy mountain road should have an emergency obstetrics dept on their doorstep.

A Brilliant Analysis of Solar Energy into the Future

vil says...

38 minutes of "brilliant analysis" later and wind power still requires subsidies and unbalances grids while nuclear power needs only more concentrated investment capital and long term government guarantees.

Building wind turbines is a good investment because they scale well and have political backing including subsidies. Nuclear power is a long term investment in a volatile sector.

Once the whole planet is run by banks and all continents are politically united, connected by a network of thick cables, wind and solar will have a chance to dominate. Right now you need backups for all those windless nights, safety valves for windy Sundays, and new transmission lines to be safe from crazy neighboring countries.

Swedish Chemist's Shop joke

ulysses1904 says...

A Frenchman and a Latino are walking down the sidewalk during a windy day. A woman in a skirt is walking towards them and a gust of wind blows her skirt up to reveal she is wearing no undergarments. She covers herself and blushes. As she passes them the Frenchman shrugs and says to her "C'est la vie".
To which the Latino replies "¡Yo también!"

Cali Officer Threatens Illegal Search

Payback says...

Is that regulation hair length? You can see how wearing it down fucks with your vision. Especially in windy situations like this.

I mean, if she actually thought they were gang members, you'd think she wouldn't want a big ol' dangerous whack of hair in her eyes.
