Also, I do feel very bad for the poor lady.

Inside Capsized Self-Righting Pilot Boat

It did look like the crane did lift too long, didn't see slack in the line before it had done 3/4 of the way. Probably to avoid the unstable equilibrium that forms when it's perfectly upside down. But yeah, doesn't really matter, the rate at which it comes back up looks sufficient that it works with out that little tuck. This is done in calm waters in that harbor, when it's choppy the waves and unstable equilibrium can't really happen.

I guess I am having difficulty squaring two of the things you've mentioned. If a devout Muslim barber can refuse to serve women and this is not seen as discrimination why can't a devout Christian refuse to participate in a gay wedding and get the same respect from you?

As to the idea that religious rights, or rights of conscience are subservient to rights of physical attributes or genetic predisposition I need more convincing. The Civil Rights Act doesn't favor one over the other. Religion ranks as an equal with race, color, sex and national origin. How are physical rights "more protected?"

An instance comes to mind where someone's religious rights are actually weighed as more important that your physical rights. Members of the Native American Church may legally use peyote. You and I will be arrested.

I see the argument of conscience vs. genetics upside down from where you've landed. So does the State of Oregon. Did you know, that if there is no reconciliation between the bakery and the State then State will move to 'rehabilitate?' Because something must be defective in the bakery owner's mind they need to be 'rehabilitated.' That is chilling. The very idea that your thoughts could be somehow suspect indicates that the State has concluded that thoughts are incredibly important. Because thoughts lead to behavior. Not only do they not want you behaving in a certain manner, they don't even want you thinking it. I reference 1984 and Animal Farm.

I am not sure that people know what they are asking for when they back this kind of intrusion. It might seem right to them at this moment, but when their counterparts are are in charge (because the pendulum swings), it makes one wonder what thoughts will be in the dock then. How will that law be used to root out contrary thinking then? I want to be free to think what I want to think. I want the privilege of being right and the privilege of being wrong. I also want you to have that privilege, as well.

As I have mentioned before, I think these laws are blunt. While I agree that people should not be discriminated against and I practice that in my own life, what is to stop the members of Westboro Baptist Church from showing up at a bakery run by gays and demand they cater an anti-gay event? How can they refuse since they already cater other events? We have opened the proverbial can of worms

First of all, I believe the Canadian woman who wanted to force devout Muslim men to cut her hair is a jerk. I think that's kind of obvious. Outside of human rights, I think there should be laws to protect you from jerks. Depending on the area, municipal or provincial legislatures could address these kinds of issues in a more sensitive, localized, one on one basis.

But when it comes to basic, universal, human rights; your life, the colour of your skin, the sex you were born as and your sexual orientation are more protected than the thoughts in your head.

So when you say “People on both sides have rights” You leave me with the impression that you think these rights are equal, and they are not.

I think the issue is maintaining acceleration. He needs to be continuously increasing his speed, which I'm guessing is easier said than done when you're upside down.

arghness said:

So it starts by saying he needs to go at 8.65mph, then he runs in a straight line at 17mph.

So what's the reason for all the failures straight after that? Is it nerves, lack of grip on the loop, huge loss of speed running up the steep edge?

TYT: Tom Perkins 1 dollar, 1 vote

Crosswords says...

The funny thing is, if this plan existed, there would be one upside. The national debt would be paid for so quick. Corporations would gladly pay huge percentages of their profits just to out-vote other corporations. We'd be able to keep our bloated defense budget. We'd be able to throw all kinds of money at infrastructure, education, and science.

They'd just use their paid for politicians to refund them all money they spent in one way or another. Kind of like they already do.

The Law You Won't Be Told - CGP Grey

newtboy says...

Yes, but the upside is that a defendant is not required to shoulder the burden of appealing (multiple) 'wrong' or 'defective' convictions in order to hope to force the slow to move legislature to consider correcting their mistakes. That seems completely unfair to me.

gorillaman said:

One of the downsides of jury nullification not mentioned in the video is that it doesn't afford higher courts the opportunity to correct defects in the law.

In the UK an eleven and a twelve year old boy set fire to some newspapers, which unknown to them spread to a wheelie bin, which spread to another wheelie bin, which spread to a shop and eventually caused ~£1 million damage. They were convicted of arson despite an extremely reluctant jury and even judge, because while it was acknowledged that the boys didn't foresee the risk of the fire spreading the standard of recklessness at the time (which had persisted for around two decades) was an objective one referring to the judgement of a hypothetical reasonable adult.

It took their conviction, and the Court of Appeals upholding that conviction, for the House of Lords to reexamine the bad precedent they'd set in an earlier case and finally revert the standard to a subjective one of the defendant's actual capacity.

It may take thousands of nullifications before legislators even notice that their terrible laws aren't being enforced, while one unsound conviction can make a difference. So your strategy as a juror may be to convict in obviously stupid cases (unconstitutional ones in the US, say), but nullify where the law appears to be functioning as intended but conflicts with your conscience.

WTF Happened to Movie Posters?

00Scud00 says...

True, but if done right a little mystery could also spark curiosity, with me at least.
Some of those posters smack you upside the head so hard the studios could almost be charged with assault with a blunt instrument. The resulting concussions could easily explain our nation's terrible viewing habits. ( as I try and fail to look innocent while standing in line to buy a ticket to 47 Ronin)

Adam Savage's Scariest Moment on Mythbusters

Try putting an upside-down reg in your mouth underwater. If it's in your mouth when you go upside-down, that's no problem. He likely didn't purge it either. Sounds like his problem was escalating fast.

Weird, I've never had an issue with an upside down regulator?
Anyone know what was going on?
Could it be that he just forgot to purge before inhaling (on the first and second breaths)?
