Wolverine to the Rescue

grinter says...

? The "meal" in question is the food reward that his trainer gives him after he digs out the lovely assistant from the audience.

...Still, trained or not, I will never intentionally stick my fingers in a wolverine's face.

GeeSussFreeK said:

Hmm I dunno, I was expecting the same thing, but he most likely would of run if he was expecting something dead and it started moving around and stuff. Insomuch as you can tame a wolverine, this one was surely not expecting a meal.

Last Resort Active Shooter Survival Measures by Alon Stivi

CaptainObvious says...

Not very good tactics - at least from what I saw.. Good for feeling more than helpless but really ineffective and a bit dishonest.

The trainers know the real deal, but are obviously providing training under restricted parameters.

Nobody is going to come through the door like that and most walls will not protect you.

The worst part is trying to put down an attacker like that. If he has a rifle you might stand a chance, if he has a handgun - its not going to work out most times. If he has a knife, it's even worse.

You need way more people by the door and they should all be in contact in a human chain.

If you are armed only with your hands against someone with a gun/knife - you have put yourself in the worse position possible with the least probability of survival.

Study Dispels Concealed Carry Firearm Fantasies

harlequinn says...

Are you excluded from having a viewing fail? (because fail I think you did)

See my comments above and you should realise how much a joke this setup is.

The point of the video is to push the agenda of the people who setup the scenario.

Maybe it takes you hundreds of hours of training under stress to not freeze up/shoot yourself/shoot innocents - but don't project that onto everyone else, some of us take to these situations naturally.

To obtain answers for your third point, why don't you look it up and report your findings back to us - we shouldn't be doing your research.

Not all of us lose skills as readily as the trainers in this video do. I know it takes me several years for ingrained skills to diminish in myself and only a few weeks of training to have them back up to speed.

SDGundamX said:

Wow, I see so many viewing fails here.

1) Yes, some of these people are gun novices. But these people got more training in gun-handling and marksmanship than is required by most states in the U.S. and they STILL failed to stop the shooter.

2) The whole point of the video is that it takes hundreds of hours of training under stress (like in this scenario) in order for people to overcome their natural instincts and avoid a) freezing up or b) accidentally shooting themselves or another innocent in the confusion.

3) How many gun carriers (barring ex-military or police) have had the kind of training mentioned in Point #2? Of those that have, how many continue to put in the training hours necessary to not lose the skill?

News Anchor Responds to Viewer Email Calling Her "Fat"

Edgeman2112 says...

>> ^CaptainPlanet:

um, he didn;t say anything wrong. what he said, he said politely. i guess obese has become a 'mean' word? well she's obese, and people should keep calling her obese until she breaks her denial and decides its a problem worth fixing

This.

The email was carefully constructed to avoid insult. He never called her fat. She was the one to bring that up. He implied she was obese. Is suddenly it wrong to classify someone under a medical term when it's true?

For all we know, the guy was a doctor, nutritionist, personal trainer, nurse, or some other healthcare professional. Does that change the tone of the whole discussion? If it does for you, then there is a double standard at work here.

I think she has some brass balls to spin this around and bring kids into the discussion which makes this a "feel sorry for me" rant. She clearly took his email personally and offensively but didn't stop to think if it was meant to be.

The only way she is truly a "victim" is if she has a medical condition that prevents her from losing weight. She never mentions that, so I assume she's simply not working hard enough on losing the weight and isn't viewing it as an issue for her health.

Stop acting like a victim, lady. I'm feel terrible that you might've been tormented as a child and the wounds keep opening, but you're an adult now and can do something about it in a more productive way than this.

Hardest Pushup In The World?

yellowc says...

1% of the world is like 70million people. So yeah, of the people in the world eligible to even attempt it, 70million isn't a small number, not really as uncommon as the percentage leads you to believe.

Even though yes, the statement is indeed pointless as his method of verification is very highly likely completely anecdotal.
>> ^Stu:

In my opinion full planche push ups are harder because of the balance involved. Yes I can do both. This just takes some practice to lock up the middle of your body. I don't believe his one percent comment. Trainers in my gym have their clients work up to these in a couple weeks. Maybe they pump an aerosol form of steroids through my gyms ventilation system.

Yeah, I can do these too, but planches are quite a bit beyond me.

Nellie the Talking Sea Otter

oOPonyOo says...

I speak Otter. She says, "Free us", and "The Allied Atheist Alliance will destroy you all!". The trainer asks, "How come?", and at :08 she says, "I don't know."

Dorky Dad Dancing at Music Festival

dannym3141 says...

I think i was probably a bit like this kid you know. I wore some of the same stuff as my dad (i remember i loved his trainers so i wanted a pair), and i sometimes think the only reason i avoided having the piss taken out of me is because the internet wasn't that big and my dad was built like a tank.

I wouldn't change it for the world. I'd even happily live like that forever, just me and my dad having fun all the time. I think i've seen a lot and done a lot for my age, and i think it doesn't get much better than that!

Usain Bolt vs. 116 Years of Olympic Sprinters

criticalthud says...

so the US guys train more and harder (since, they're from AMERICA, fuck ya!) and have better locker rooms? and more money makes the athlete?
hmmm....
just ribbing you. sure, lots of variables, those included.
a strange one is...track and field isn't even really popular in the US. Most athletes opt for other sports.

Well, I'd imagine @Unsung_Hero got it right. More money for athletes = not having to flip burgers at a "day job" = more time to train.
Also not so much locker rooms, but dieticians, personal trainers and so on. Contrast with (for example) Ireland which got it's first olympic sized swimming pool in the 90s.

Ok, then explain how we don't do as well in distance events. do we not train for those? Why do those broke-ass kenyans whup up on us fancy pants all the time? must be the diet?

Monkey Tries to Break Out of Zoo

spoco2 says...

Ok, I think the problem here is that both parties are stating what they 'think' the chimp is saying in absolute terms.

'He's asking you to open the cage by turning the bolts'
'He's just asking you for the bits of mandarin'

In both cases it should be 'It looks like he might be trying to tell me.... X, Y or Z'

You don't know at all.

Also, with his finger in the palm gesture, that looks like a taught gesture so the trainer would probably have more idea of what the chimp is saying. (it does LOOK like he's just saying 'Look, that thing there, put it in my hand... I want it')

And yes, I can't tell male from female chimps, so me calling him a male is purely for convenience.

What in the fuck is wrong with you people? Did any of you watch the video!? There are two orange things in front of the cage. He's pointing at them, and at his palm. He thinks it's food and wants the humans to hand it over. He is not asking them to undo the bolts.
The reaction I see all over the web to this video makes me weep for humanity's dull perception. I also want to punch the guy in front who thinks he's communicating with the chimp.

Well-then get off your lazy butt and go to the zoo and let them know that you CAN understand the chimp. With the great power of chimp-whispering comes great responsibility. Don't squander your talent, chimps round the world need you!

You mean the great power of opening my fucking eyes to what's obvious?

Who made you Dr. Dolittle?
Your explanation is as grounded in fact as anyone else's. It's a decent explanation but a million miles away from being factually true. Last time i checked you can't speak chimp and you're not telepathic.
Seriously, get off the high horse, you don't know anything about this either.

I'm finishing an MA in English Literature myself, so I was simply wondering what kind of kindred spirit you were
In reply to this comment by messenger:
ESL (English as a second language) teacher and ESL teacher trainer. I also write bits and bobs as an on-and-off hobby and take form quite seriously. The 12 years I referred to also includes my undergrad in Linguistics. Now that I think about it, it's only 11 years.

Any particular reason this got your interest? In reply to this comment by hpqp:
You've piqued my curiosity: are you a teacher? Journalist? Scribe?
