Spider Shoots 25 Metre Web

Buttle says...

I want to hear the story of that other spider, the one unfortunate enough to hatch out on the downwind side of the stream. She has to patiently wait for some fortunate upwind spider, hatched with a silver spoon in her mouth, to waft a pilot web over. Then she jumps on it, and has to buffalo the other haughty spider off.

But no, no love for my spider at all.

Looks Like Trump is Now Peddling Russian Propaganda

Januari says...

I wouldn't in any way suggest that Olberman's credibility is unassailable, however i wouldn't put it one iota above wikileaks anymore.

Your own fairly strong bias not withstanding, i completely understand why wouldn't trust government bodies. However Greenwald's article (as much as i got through) seem to hing entirely on that premise that you can't prove this all hatches from some shadowy russian agency or from the desk of Putin himself. And on that he is probably right, even if US intelligence has proof they'd like not publicly air it.

But to ignore the body of trump's comments, people who've worked for him, his own dealings and associations, isn't 'helping' either. And to do it you have to really want to believe in an organization which increasingly fails to meet its promises and seems to be operating under its own agenda, and a man who seems far more interested in promoting his brand.

To me the point of the video is to demonstrate how easily it is to manipulate Trump, and certainly nothing i saw in that article you posted dissuades me from that.

How free games are designed to make money

yellowc says...

Well I'm glad she added that Pokemon Go has a fairly reasonable model, I feel like that was the strong hand of Nintendo.

If you take away location differences, which there is a glaring issue with at the moment. Two players in the same reasonably supported area, the major difference in needing to spend money is how much you want to walk and that's the core of the game.

So if you want to play the game as designed (with no false limitations), you can generally play for free.

She's also not wrong that because of all that, I actually was inclined to make a purchase, it was small and I spent it on the non-expendable upgrades but I've been pretty anti-freeium in the past, so it was a big step for me to give such a game money.

I think Pokemon Go has certainly obliterated that 1-2% pay money statistic. I'm positive reports will eventually show it had a much higher stat.

It's not a saint, you can still gain a sizeable advantage by spending a lot of cash and these elements are still very much targeting the addiction of whales (expendable, short durations, element of luck with egg hatching). But it is a refreshing change for how they treat the "other" group of players.

A Ford Flathead V-8 Rebuild Time-lapse

newtboy says...

At 1:50, they appear to be making the cylinder hole larger. They would then either 1)buy new pistons to fit the larger bore or 2) if they just took off a tiny bit to remove a scratch and it's still within tolerance they could just reuse the old pistons with new rings. In this case, those certainly looked like new pistons, which should be matched to the bore they just cut. Notice at 3:48 you can see ".030" stamped into it, which likely means .030 inches over stock.
At 2:05, I think they are 'dressing' the bore, which puts a cross hatch pattern in the cylinder wall that helps the rings seat and seal.

As to your side note...it's a style choice. Some people love the old, stock, unrefinished body paired with new running gear for a car that looks like junk but runs like a top. At least that's my guess...and that's how both of my cars are built.

So here's a question. When they redrill the holes at 1:50 and 2:05, does it not make the bore bigger and therefore allow more gas to escape the pistons?
Side note, I have to wonder why they didn't restore the truck itself while the engine was out being rebuilt.

Gator vs Truck

Asmo says...

No, much like crocodiles, they will defend against all comers, even much larger males that have little chance of winning against, often well past the point that the eggs have hatched.

And for noting, the bite pressure of the alligator has been measured at 2200 psi, 3rd place in "highest bite strength of any animal in the world" competition behind the nile croc (5000 psi) and the saltwater croc (7000 odd psi).

Does the guy in the vid really need any more reasons to leave the poor fucking thing alone... \= )

Mamma croc protecting her home? They leave their eggs to fend for themselves anyway don't they? Regardless, impressive show of reptilian strength!

Dutch journalist Jeroen Akkermans keeps uploading scores of pictures taken at the MH17 crash site to his Flickr account. No corpses, just debris -- no warning neccessary.

A few interesting pictures, if you don't mind amateur forensics:
- left wing, top side: damaged by debris coming from the fuselage at an outward trajectory
- window panel, aft-most cockpit window, port side: shredded by shrapnel, downward trajectory?
- second door from the front, port side: no damage from shrapnel or debris
- port-side hatch of the forward landing gear: no damage

So, explosion in the foward-left quadrant, above the cockpit?

I know, I know -- wild speculation, utterly without a point. But it's infinitly less depressing than looking at the latest pictures from Gaza. Bad days to be a news junkie...

Edit: rear door, starboard side -- no damage

Yeah, I'm surprised they didn't red flag the event until they could remove him.

The description was along these lines btw:

Jack Cottle, 21, was driving his girlfriend's white Volkswagen car and managed to sneak onto the Brands Hatch Circuit in England, where racing was taking place. Jack succeeded in avoiding the security at the stands, entering the track and competing with the real competitors. His girlfriend is terrified and asked him several times to stop, while a friend filmed the scene from the rear of the vehicle. Police arrested Jack following the release of this video, he was released on bail and faces a heavy fine. The participants of the race want compensation for their position on the podium has been greatly marred by the arrival of this competitor. The fine could be up to € 130,000.

I only saw the external shot before, not the in-car video.

Rescued Laboratory Beagles See The World For The First Time

entr0py says...

Basically yes. This was done in voluntary partnership with the lab, who will remain anonymous, just because they were done with that batch of dogs. It's not like they hatched a daring escape plan, complete with puppy sized tunnels to freedom.

It's a bit of a dilemma to me. Of course it's good to find them homes once all the science is done. But, by making a video that seems like such a happy ending it makes the practice seem not so bad. As if these dogs just had to work in a lab for a couple of years, then retire in some sort of luxury puppy villa.

Long live the Queen, Frank Turner

eric3579 says...

I was sipping on a Whiskey when I got the call
Yeah my friend Lex was lying in the hospital
She'd been pretty sick for about half a year
But it seems liked this time the end was drawing near
So dropped my plans and jumped the next London train
I found her laid up and in a lot of pain
Her eyes met mine and then I understood
That her weather forecast wasn't looking too good
So I sat and spun her stories for a little while
Tried to raise her mood and tried to raise a smile
But she silenced all my rambling with a shake of her head
Drew me close and listen this is what she said now

"You'll live to dance another day,
it's just now you'll have to dance, for the two of us,
so stop looking so damn depressed
and sing with all your heart that the Queen is dead"

Yeah she told me she was sick of all the hospital food
And of doctors, distant relatives, draining her blood
She said "I know I'm dying, but I'm not finished just yet,
I am dying for a drink and for a cigarette"
So we hatched a plan to book ourselves a cheap hotel
In the centre of the City and to raise some Hell
They waste to all the clubs and then when everyone else is long asleep
We know we're good and done

"You'll live to dance another day,
it's just now you'll have to dance, for the two of us,
so stop looking so damn depressed
and sing with all your heart that the Queen is dead"
And South London's not the same anymore
The Queen is dead, and the last of the great has finally gone to bed

Well I was working on some words when Sarah called me up
She said that Lex had gone asleep and wasn't waking up
And even though I knew that there was nothing to be done
I felt bad for not being there and now, well, she was gone
So I tried to think what Lex would want me to do
At times like this when I was feeling blue
So I gathered up some friends to spread the sad sad news
And we headed to the City for a drink or two
And we sang

"We live to dance another day,
it's just now we have to dance for one more of us,
so stop looking so damn depressed,
and sing with all our hearts, long live the Queen"
