I've been following this story here. Sure was happy when they were found alive -- I had started to lose much hope after they'd been gone 4+ days.

The bad news today is that a Thai volunteer diver, a former SEAL, died on a return trip from setting up extra air supply tanks along the route. BBC coverage is very good:

Most cave diving experts think that it would be extremely risky to try to move the kids out by diving. One of the on-scene people from the US has said that none of the boys know how to swim, let alone dive, and the conditions in cave diving make it so that panic can quickly lead to disaster.

Unfortunately, a new complication has come up. Oxygen levels in the chamber they are in are now at 15%, down from the usual 21%. They are working to get piping in to supply fresh air, but logistics of that are difficult since they need about 3 miles of piping. And to make matters worse, heavy rains are in the forecast, which will further stress the pumping that they are doing to keep water levels low in the cave.

The Thai head of the Navy rescue operation was quoted today as saying that "At first, we thought the children could stay for a long time... but now things have changed, we have a limited time." If that is correct and can't be resolved (due to dropping oxygen levels, rising water, or whatever), they may have to opt for the risky exit via diving. So definitely not out of the woods yet.

Personally, I'm more disbelieving of how a man, wearing a suit with a built in air supply, would drown...

This is perfect for jobs where the item to be cleaned has many crevices and corners. The only downside is that you'd need an air supply or you'd be breathing cancer fumes.

Question for someone who might know:

As I understand it, the warmest it gets on mars is about 0 degrees C. So, that being the case and not so bad, could I survive on the surface at that point with just my big winter coat and an air supply?

edit: Okay, after a bit of research I see the atmospheric pressure is very, very low. Would this be a big deal given the air supply? I assume my eyes wouldn't bug out all over the place like Arnie's.

Next on the list is high solar radiation, which is a problem (perhaps a foil parasol to go with my coat).

It also has very high winds, so I'll need something to hold on to. They would probably blow my parasol away though, unfortunately.

Bot flies (Order Diptera, Family Cuterebridae) are large, stout bodied, hairy flies that resemble bumblebees. The botfly egg is deposited by a mosquito or sometimes by another insect. The larva grows in the host's body until it is fairly large. The botfly larva can easily be killed by taking away its air supply -- by putting vaseline or similar on the skin where the lump is, but then you still have to extract the larva.

Very similar, but not the same, no.

As much as i hate to admit it, MarineGunrock is totally right. Think about any situation involving low pressure gas.

Want to commit suicide? Well, sit in your car in the garage, turn the engine on, but first make the car's interior air-tight using duct tape. You'll die because your body will use up all the breathable air, not because of car fumes. There won't be a single car-created toxin inside at all. Then you could take a deep breath, open the car and exit via the door. There's a reason people put a hose-pipe from the exhaust through the window. You could live off the oxygen in a car even if there was mustard gas outside in your garage.

You could climb inside a human balloon like a crazed german fetishist and live quite comfortably for as long as the oxygen in that balloon held out for you in a room full of nerve gas.

Submarines too, in fact. If you had the tape strong enough and sticky enough, you could TAPE two metal skips together and submerge yourself in safety.

What's this guy saying? The only negative thing about duct tape is that you're sealing yourself in an air tight container with a limited supply of air. But then you can conserve the air by doing things such as sleeping, and make the entire air supply in your house last you for a few days, and by that time maybe it'll be safe enough to go out, or you'll be rescued by people with portable air supplies.

Or, you know, don't make your house air tight, and die in a dissolving pool of your own lungs, bowels and feces.

(I don't find him funny anyway, but i hope people aren't upvoting for this (lack of) observation!)

This stuff was a big fundie fad back in the 80's....scaring everyone. All the good little fundies went home crying to smash their Chicago and Air Supply albums.
