Any thoughts as to how this was pulled off? I would guess the guy was a lower-body amputee, but I've never seen an amputee with that much of the body missing, and I don't see how the lower body, which would have to be prosthetics, could work so well.

A Brief History of Meth - The Salton Sea (2002)

choggie says...

If you have yet to see this film, wait no longer for some of the most inspired roles, another, "Here's the script, make up the character" for D'Nonofrio, who portrays a dealer whose past meth abuse, has netted him a hole where his nose goes, and a prosthetic collection for the front...great film, truly twisted.....

For what it's worth:

The man later got a prosthetic face (an interesting story by itself, created by a man who had his own history working for the CIA): http://www.healthaire.co.nz/images/mark_tatum3.jpg

And apparently he did die of unknown causes: http://www.mold-help.org/content/view/544/

"Mr. Mark Tatum, also known by many as the man without a face, passed 4:00 CST Saturday, February 26, 2005 at the Medco Center of Franklin, Kentucky. Tatum lost his eyes, upper jaw, and nose to a fungal infection in 2000. This type of infection is not that unusual, but the extent of the damage that it did to Tatum was very rare. Tatum was a medical phenomena due to the fact that he survived the infection. Due to his extreme experience, Tatum was highly profiled in the media by many people including Larry King, Maury Povich, and Ripley's Believe it or Not. He was a courageous individual who served as a symbol of strength for the thousands of people who have lost their health, homes, and livliehood from fungal exposure.

According to a friend who spoke to him that day, Mr. Tatum was in good spirits and feeling very positive towards his future. He had just been fitted with a new prosthetic face (see below). He was extremely excited about helping victims of toxagenic mold exposure so he could uncover the real truth about fungus as a synonymous predator to the virus and bacteria.

At this point, the cause of his death is still unknown. An autopsy has been requested by his family. More information will be posted when we obtain the results.

Funeral services were held March 2, 2005 at Crafton Funeral Home. The Rev. Winston Roberts officiated with burial at Hillsdale Cemetery. Tatum was a native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and worked as a security guard until his fungal infection in 2000. He was the son of the late Franklin Eugene Tatum and Emma Thomas Tatum.

Donations in Mark Tatum's name will be gratefully accepted to assist the Children's Angel Fund:

You can read more on the page. I will be sending along a donation for that fund soon. I was impressed by the strength and courage displayed by Mr. and Mrs. Tatum. I don't know if I would have had the same strength of will to keep fighting if I were in the same situation.

One more vote to send this to the front...

'Scent of a Woman' - Great Moments In Cinema

Farhad2000 says...

Scent of a Woman is a 1992 film which tells the story of a preparatory school student who takes a job as an assistant to an irascible blind, medically retired Army officer. It stars Al Pacino, Chris O'Donnell, James Rebhorn, Gabrielle Anwar, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It won the Academy Award for Best Actor (Al Pacino) and was nominated for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

This should be watched by everyone growing up. Some trivia for you

* Al Pacino was helped by a school for the blind in preparation for his role. He says he made himself look blind by not focusing his view on anything, and that using prosthetic contact lenses would "fake" his performance.

* During the disciplinary meeting, the headmaster tells Slade "You are out of order!", a line told to another of Pacino's characters in ...And Justice for All (1979).

* Director Martin Brest disowned the version of the film shown on airlines and television.

* In order to get Charlie out of the hotel room Slade asks him to buy some aspirins and a Montecristo no. 1 cigar, a Cuban product banned in the US due to the Cuban embargo. As this task is impossible it would keep Charlie away for a long time.

* Pacino prepared for the famous "tango" scene in the movie by taking intensive Argentine tango lessons at DanceSport, a Manhattan dance studio located near Columbus Circle.

* Slade notices the girl he will tango with a few minutes later by her smell. When Slade and Charlie talk to her, she tells her name was Donna - which is the Italian word for "woman". The approach scene therefore is a homage to the title of the original 1974 movie Profumo Di Donna.

Before you Enlist - what military recruiters don't tell you

choggie says...

so...the job didn't make you feeeel good about yerself like the viddy showed and the recruiter said......
uhhh...., morons and those not, but not that bright, in any discipline, if they do not constantly adapt and move with the dynamic of the world they exist in, will find themselves confused and bewildered by their experiences. The predictable response from a number of those folks, is to blame, and complain, rather than......Pick up,Dust Off, Start Over-which is where everyone ends up, everyday, making us all the same whether flippin' boigas, or learning to walk with a prosthetic limb.

Whiners-Know the stakes....then make a decision based on the information, and the process the lord gave ya! Hopefully, it will all work out.

What military recruiters don't tell you.....You Should Already Know!!! Jesssus!
