Bill O'Reilly is Stupid

Yogi says...

>> ^notarobot:

Sigh. Bill-O isn't actually stupid. He is articulate, and well spoken, and has a toilet paper roll up to his eye of his mind when he looks at the tiny tiny piece of the world that he represents.
He is right that the world is changing, but I wish he, and people like him would take off their blinders so he (and others) could grow to change with it, instead of complaining that the changes (many of which are set in motion when his generation was young) are taking place.

You're absolutely right, America has since the 60s been becoming more civilized. This is why people talk about the 60s as the time of troubles, this horrible time where there was too much democracy and crazy people were civilizing the nation. All these new movements started happening, carrying on into the 70s. We could admit the horrible crimes we committed to take this country from it's Native population which we exterminated. Heck look at colleges...before the 60s it was white deferential males. Now it's half women, a third minorities. Heck at my college as a white guy I'm in the minority! That's unheard of 50 years ago.

So BillO does have a point, but he's talking about it like it's a bad thing. He's on the wrong side of history.

Honestly, I think Bill is just playing a role like Colbert. So is Glen Beck, they're just paid to advance a narrative.

Bill? Maybe.

Beck? I dunno, I honestly believe there is a touch of the foaming-at-the-mouth lunatic that believes his own bullshit about him. Or maybe he's just a much better actor than I give him credit for.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Fox News was actually a cunning liberal ploy to illustrate the insanity of the right that backfired horribly?

^I've not thought about it or studied it in great detail, so perhaps I should keep my trap shut until I do.

Please do not.

One of the ways that we can grow is the exchange of ideas. As I re-read your original comment, it come off to me as if you are purely mentioning your opinion. This is even more strongly backed up by your response of, essentially, "Oh, I hadn't thought of it that way."

The Rumble 2012 - Jon Stewart vs. Bill O'Reilly

bareboards2 says...

Raising the age is fine if it is means tested.

Poorer people don't live as long. Poorer people tend to work at jobs that are much harder on their bodies. Adding years to when they are eligible to collect social security isn't right.

Can you imagine being a janitor at age 68? Dang.

Also --

Maybe I don't understand, but Jon said -- let's means test social security. Bill-o said no, then proceeded to say means testing for the rich. Am I missing something?

I also agree that capitalism is the problem with our discourse. It's not just the selling of hate, it is also the selling of fear and sex and cute kitten videos. When a news room has to make a profit, they are offering stories that pander to the lowest common denominator. Reagan's Iran contra mess, while well covered, was nothing compared to the coverage of Clinton and the stained dress and the cigar. Because sex sells.

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:

I actually agreed with BillO on a few issues. I think raising the social security age and cutting rich people off from social security benefits is a reasonable idea. I also agree that people are being hired to spread hate... mainly by the FOX news network. He also admits Iraq was a bad idea/disaster.
Bill doesn't seem that extreme when compared to the Glenn Becks and Alex Jones of the world.
