ayn rand and her stories of rapey heroes

heropsycho says...

I am not a supporter of Objectivism, but to say Ayn Rand didn't support anything, but was only against things isn't accurate. She was passionately in favor of capitalism, reason, science, and individual rights. Her biggest weakness was as unwavering belief that she was right, and everyone else was wrong without any doubts whatsoever, even when the evidence was practically slapping her in the face because if something contradicted her philosophy, it had to be wrong.

Her affair with Nathaniel Branden was a perfect example. You can't say she was anti-marriage. She was however passionately in favor of affairs in marriage if one felt as she did about Branden, even as her husband and his wife drank themselves into oblivion in a feable attempt to cope.

If you think she was simply contrarian, then you completely missed what her ideas were.

I didn't say it allied with the current GOP, I said it provided cover for them.

However, there are distinct similarities as well. Her philosophy is nothing but an anti-philosophy, which is analogous to the GOP's policies which are also nothing but an anti-democrat stance. Neither one is -for- anything, they're only against the other side. Neither one provides any original thought or options.

What completely, utterly blows my mind about this clip is the repeated insistence this would appeal to the Tea Partiers, who are very often very religious. Does the Tea Party/Fox realize Ayn Rand was probably more atheist than Karl Marx, and advocated extra-marital affairs so long as it's not hidden from your spouse? (Google Nathaniel Branden!) Good times!

What? In order to realize that, first one must be at least somewhat literate, and second one must be able and willing to do some research into actual facts. Neither of these follows the party's platform.

Those TP'ers who do realize such are usually more manipulators than believers, and don't really care what the facts are.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - The Message

michie says...

Flash played illegal parties and also worked with rappers such as Kurtis Blow and Lovebug Starski. He formed his own group in the late 1970s, after promptings from Ray Chandler. The initial members were Cowboy (Keith Wiggins), Melle Mel (Melvin Glover) and Kid(d) Creole (Nathaniel Glover) making Grandmaster Flash & the 3 MCs. Two other rappers briefly joined, but they were replaced more permanently by Rahiem (Guy Todd Williams, previously in the Funky Four) and Scorpio (Eddie Morris, also used the name Mr. Ness) to create Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. Soon gaining recognition for their skillful raps, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five pioneered MCing, freestyle battles, and invented some of the staple phrases in MCing. They performed at Disco Fever in the Bronx beginning in 1978.

I went with a whole group of my buddies from Concordia university, we were like a large group of people (Me, Khaleed, Jamal, Oscar, Mike, Bryce, Ryan, Ali, Nathaniel, Fareed and these 3 other guys I don't know that well). So out we coming pouring from Bell Center, with the other 21,000 or so people that attended the Montreal Canadians vs Ottawa Senators game. Everyone was pouring out on the vast parking lot surrounded by restaurants like Baton Rouge and shit.

We were walking along with the crowd, cheering the win "Go Habs Go!", some guys pass us and cheer with us for a while, suddenly some innocent words are taken harshly (something about feeling bad for the Senators) one guy from their group started fighting with the 3 random guys we met, another started pummeling Fareed in the face. The rest of us got into it trying to break it up, Ryan went insane and started totally fucking these guys up (this guys goes to the gym everyday for 3 hours, oddly enough he's in finance) other guys running in held other guys, this wasn't taken nicely, random people started hitting each other. 3 or 5 little brawling groups emerged, we totally outnumbered the other group by like 5 people, but most of us were trying to stop it. People slipped on the pavement and road, people were kicking each other in the face, punching everything. It got really violent as one of the enemy fell down and someone kicked him in the face repeatdely, I was holding down another guy who spun me around, my glasses flew off but I held him back and down like a bitch. Finally we broke it up, everything seemed okay, I picked up my glasses and we started to move on all going like "WTF Just Happened?"... especially since everyone was from Montreal and we fucking won!

Further up the street the fight again started up again, we stopped it quickly and confronted the guys it seemed like we worked everything out, then someone called Fareed an arab terrorist bitch, it got testy and we were nose to nose with these guys. Someone pushed someone, my friend who held up the fight was attacked and again the fight developed with the same guys again, same shit seemed to start up, but this time a MTL police officer grabbed one of these guys and screamed into his ear "TO MOVE ON". It was over right there. We recovered, and continued down the road, still shocked with what happened. Everything seemed over and we were all laughing now because we really fucked the other guys up in defense.

Like a block down we were all talking, I looked back just to see group running up to us. One of them punched a friend in the back, another grabbed a friend and spun him around, I ran in holding back on of them. Our friends were breaking it up, but then lost it and we started destroying these bastards. I held one guy down the whole time, I got punched and scraped in the process by someone else (I have a cut above my eye, and a big red punch mark on my face...).

This fight got so insane that we actually crossed a two lane street and ended up splitting up, I ended up on the other side. I just yelled at the fucker I held down let go and kicked him away... We all met up in the middle of the busy street and felt triumphant! What an amazing night! Great introduction to Hockey! I just wish I had my camera LOL

I wonder what the fuck all the people in the cars thought, who were passing this insanity the whole time.

In reply to your comment:
Hold on what, you got into a fight after the hockey game? Details!!!

Nathaniel Hornblower storms the stage at the 1994 MTV Music Awards

parra says...

Nathaniel Hornblower is MCA (Adam Yauch) from the Beastie Boys, whose video for Sabotage was directed by Spike Jonze lost out to the turgid Everybody Hurts.

He quite rightly felt he needed to take a stand against this injustice.
