Out of Balance - Trailer

Fedquip says...

Yes, the climate goes in cycles, there have been ice ages before. But we also know climate can kill civilizations...and build civilizations (drought brought remote Africans to the Nile for example.)

If you watch the doc, you can clearly see there is an industry...the richest industry in the world that is using its extreme wealth to not make our planet a better place to live, and democracies should use their power of the people to fight these types of businesses. Maybe I would forgive Exxon for their years of damaging the earth if they started committing cleaner and maybe renewable energies, sure they wont make billions and billions every year, but what the hell are they doing with the billions and billions they already make? Buying yachts? bribing the Media? funding hack scientists.

Global Warming has been chewed up and spit out by the MSM, but its time for people to start thinking for themselves, the actions of these liars who are profiting from the literal destruction of the planet needs to be dealt with. The science is in. Spewing pollution into air is warming up the planet and already making it very unlivable (ever spent a summer in Toronto? Try Bejing!) That warmth is causing climates all over the earth to act wacky...It wont kill our planet, but it could certainly make the world a much less pleasant place for humans and animals to live (although in some places its not really pleasant right now.)

I don't mean to be an alarmist, but I grew up learning about the environment, we learnt about Global Warming in grade school back in the 80s. At that time we were under the impression that "adults" were taking care of it by recycling and composting. Then Canada starts profiting from the oil sands and our Global warming priorities are suddenly lined up with America...Where "The Jury is still out." - Understand our PM is loyal to Bush, but our PM cuts taxes and thats why people like him, don't worry about the 2500 troops euchred in Ghanistan. Once the arctic melts you can trade from Canada to Europe in hours, you almost have to wonder if these guys simply WANT to destroy the planet...apparently it pays. - http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=1841989

Maybe another time. (Blog Entry by persephone)

persephone says...

I agree that no matter what their looks, women can be targets. I also agree that buying into fear is not the way to go. When I was young, I was never afraid and my parents never cautioned me in any way, either, but I did get into some tricky situations and suffered because of it.

The deadly onslaught was a bit of writer's licence, but for many women, not an exaggeration at all.

I've met victims of date rape. One woman who went out with friends and woke up in a basement, naked, obviously been raped, but had no memory of anything. When I met her she was waiting to hear back re all the blood tests that she had to go through. One older woman met a guy on the internet and went out with him a couple of times.
She was date-raped at the good old age of mid-fifty. He didn't drug her, just coerced her. Didn't listen when she said no and overpowered her in various ways.

What I was trying to explain by sharing my experience, was that I felt like I was on show, like something for consumption, with lots of comments as well as physical advances and I often felt unequipped to deal with it.

I wouldn't advocate mace or anything else, only because it means having a level of prepared-ness that I would be incapable of holding onto and function normally at the same time. I'd always be on high alert and this would drive me crazy.

I was raped too, by someone I knew well and who had a position of authority over me. At 21, I was so star-struck by this guy that it took me about 10 years to realise that at that time, I felt I had no voice, that it wasn't appropriate and that I didn't want it at all. I just needed somewhere to stay and someone to listen to me. Instead, I got the works.

I think this issue is as much about young women needing a strong sense of themselves, as anything else. Why isn't it instilled in women that they are not some thing that can be chewed up and spat out, for someone else's pleasure? The beauty bit just means that the male attention can be constant and blatant. I wasn't trying to say that only beautiful women suffer.

I do wish I had someone to look out for me at that time. My parents didn't, neither did my friends and I was too dumb to realise what poor choices I was making.

Glad to say that time is over now. Aging fast with post-baby belly that never recovered, I don't have to fear the deadly onslaught either!

Mario on Acid - Anti-piracy Ad

wax66 says...

Clumsy, read up on the performance hit caused by the different versions of SafeDisc. I used to buy my games at the store, then download the no-cd crack so that it wouldn't chew up 10 percent of my CPU. So yes, pirated games run better.

Guy Finds A Zebra Killed By Lions And Eats What's Left Over

bamdrew says...

i remember this guy doing the same thing with a salmon he snagged in Alaska; just took a bite out of it while it was still wrigglin around. one would assume he could easily start a small fire (because I could, and i'm nobody special), but maybe there's little showmenship in that.

as an aside the statement that this kill was just abandoned by lions seems rather dubious to me... yes, i'm calling BS on a discovery channel show... The ribs don't appear broken or chewed up, yet are stripped of meat, and all of the entrails are gone yet no other scavengers appear to be around or to have chewed it up. Leaving to whole front leg haunches yet eating nearly all the scraps of the lower carcass? possibly BS?

Attack of the Flying Dongs

winkler1 says...

A bunch of griefers in Second Life staged a members-only metaverse assault on "virtual real estate tycoon" Anshe Chung yesterday, during a staged SL event with CNET reporter Daniel Terdiman. A torrent of pixelated male genitals rained upon the victim, whose offline name is Ailin Graef.

Steve Hutcheon of the Sydney Morning Herald filed a comprehensive report of the incident here and tells BoingBoing, "If you can't visualize it, see this YouTube clip: Link." Snip from Steve's report:

"She is very popular, and some people don't like her," said CNET reporter Daniel Terdiman, whose Second Life avatar (online persona), GreeterDan Godel, was interviewing Anshe at the time of the attack.

"She's made a lot of money, and is one of the most prominent of all Second Life residents. So to some people, some griefers, that makes her a target."

Griefers are so-called because they create grief. Their antics are designed to interrupt proceedings in virtual worlds and games usually for no other reason than because they can.

Attacks like the one launched against Anshe are triggered by a program code that generates self-replicating objects.

Much like email spam, these "griefspawn" attacks can chew up system resources and slowing down performance. They can sometimes even trigger network crashes.

Diet Coke+Mentos=Human experiment: Do you think his reaction is faked?

joedirt says...

The idea is that he explodes and they threw blood on the wall. and then he is laying on the ground.

I voted down because he chewed up the mentos. The idea behind mentos is the increased surface area allows more bubbles. I think MythBusters credits nucleation sites. So by chewing the things, he just got a mouthful of foamy diet coke.

I'm half convinced all the internet vids are put there by Coca-Cola. Do you have any idea how many 2-liters have been wasted in the last month. I should buy coke stock.

Setting Queue Escape Level to 7 Peak 6 Offpeak (Sift Talk Post)

dotdude says...

This morning I have some ideas concerning the queue.

How about choices for viewing it:

• Least to most votes
• Most to least votes
• Least to most days
• Most to least days
• Least to most viewed
*Most to least viewed

In the top rated videos section there are different ways to look at the video. That’s what gave me the idea.

As for the long videos . . . those chew up a lot of sifting time. Fortunately I have not been disappointed when I have looked at those. Maybe there should be a designation label for time length on them when they are submitted. Google has:

• All durations
• Short (<4 min) • Medium (4 – 20 min)
• Long (>20 min)

Google also offers a “sort by”:

• Relevance
• Date
• Title

With a larger number of members involved with this site, the “sifting process” out of the queue will be happening faster. Who participates when is going to affect what makes it out of the queue and when. I have noticed some folks being less shy about the “down vote.” What we’re used to will be different with 3,000 members out there.

The “dupe police” are going to be even busier.

Cat Rescue gone horribly wrong ft. Bill Nye on Reno 911

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Can someone help ACE out here? I'm squashing bugs at the moment. If we can get a good explanation, I'll place it in the FAQ, and link it off the profile page.

I know some people would like to have another solution besides flickr, but I'll tell you, the nice thing about Flickr, from our standpoint, is that much like the videos, we don't host anything that chews up bandwidth, and we can scale up quite nicely without a heavy day killing our poor VPS.
