in what units were the depth measurement? Feet?

Metres I think.

nope... its measured in feet. so it is not THAT much since these whales can dive up to 2000m deep. but as an scuba diver I would say that about 900m is deep enough

still...to be able to hold your breath that long. amazing

im confused by the floating on ground phrase... was that whale dead or asleep? drunk?

He's floating - almost looking like dead - for two reasons:
1. saving oxygen, so that he can dive up to 1 1/2 hours
2. not to scare away any prey
and perhaps any other reason I don't know about...
