Non-Euclidean Level Design in AA

tonymyre311 of youtube demonstrates his work on bringing back this type of level design.

Older engines for games like Marathon, Duke Nukem, and Dark Forces (starwars), have been able to do this for years, but top developers seem to ignore trying to do anything with it. I personally love the concept.

Portal!

It would totally be much better if the screen didn't flash when changing zones. Would make the transitions much more seemless adding to the illusion.

In complete agreement. Additionally, I do not know if the America's Army Engine supports shooting through the portals like other games do.

Well there is Prey and portal 1 and soon 2, based entirely around this concept, plus, occasional stunts in Unreal, Quake 3 (teleporters in the demo IIRC, abandoned in favor of ugly-ass columns with wings to enhance performance).

The problem with designs based on this that they require a good explanation in the gameworld, and can seem confusing to the player, and while it seems to open up endless possibilities in gameplay, it gets old surprisingly quick in most cases, theres a definitive "woah, freaky" first impression, but it turns out to be hard to be really innovative with it. Prey really tried, but failed.

By far the best implementation IMO is in Portal, a free demo can be found here (requires Steam)

Yes, yes, and HELL FUCKING YES. Everyone automatically thinks of Portal, but Prey pushed the envelop. Easily one of my top ten all time favorite FPS. It fucked with gravity, you could walk through portals and end up on a miniature planet inside a glass container in the middle of the room you were just in, walk on walls, the ceiling, and it was also a twisted alien gorefest with a Native American protagonist that could enter the spirit world to fight poltergeists.

Maybe Prey deserves another look see.

I remember it initially, but was turned off by some of the gameplay I saw.

I am sad that it does not appear to be available through steam, I was hoping there might be a holiday special discount coming up.

It's been a long time, but I also seem to remember a scene like that in Max Payne. Where Max was drugged out and hallucinating, corridors seemed to disappear, or stretch on forever.
