hug an atheist

Atheists are hated for no good reason.

United States Constitution - Article VI, paragraph 3.

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

I'd love to see a politician answer all religious questions with this quote. They'd get my vote.

I've always kinda thought atheists are hated because people fear the consequences of atheists being right.

I am of the opinion that it's simply because America is the only free place in the world where Christianity is the norm, rather than the exception. Any group that feels safety in numbers tends to persecute the minority members, at least verbally.

That, and it's very easy for us to forget all the other nations that do NOT have freedom of religion, in which being Atheist means you are persecuted considerably more. In many Muslim nations, someone who professes themselves as "Atheist" would be completely ostracized from society.
