I'd love to see a politician answer all religious questions with this quote. They'd get my vote.

I am of the opinion that it's simply because America is the only free place in the world where Christianity is the norm, rather than the exception. Any group that feels safety in numbers tends to persecute the minority members, at least verbally.
That, and it's very easy for us to forget all the other nations that do NOT have freedom of religion, in which being Atheist means you are persecuted considerably more. In many Muslim nations, someone who professes themselves as "Atheist" would be completely ostracized from society.
