StormsingerA whole $10 million dollars for the Jail Diversion Program at the Center for Mental Health Services... Wow.
-This- is what happens when conservatives are allowed into power. Combined with their self-made claims to primacy on moral values and a religion that supposedly teaches love and acceptance, I believe this speaks volumes about the nature of hypocrisy.
Compassionate conservative...an oxymoron if there ever was one.
peggedbea^ it's not just conservatives that are the problem though really. mental illness itself is a growing problem that is misunderstood, stigmatized and terrifying. and it's not like these people have anyone to speak up for their rights and needs. on the whole, they're really really good at alienating and fucking over anyone who ever cared about them. (i claim personal authority on this, you get no link) and really really good at evasive action to avoid treatment or effective research.
they are the human refuse. and a population that is costing more money than we have been able to effectively calculate, and all for not.
humanity as a whole has failed at effectively preventing, predicting, diagnosing, treating and caring for the vast litany of mental illnesses.
StormsingerI have had some experience in that area myself, Bea (I'm guessing you've missed my previous rants on the subject). My wife has several diagnoses, depending on which psychiatrist you're talking too. And the value of a psychiatrist/psychologist/councilor is only slightly better than that of a witchdoctor/priest.
But it's not the progressives who say "We can't afford to even -try- to help them" and restrict the budget to a pittance.
Study is the only hope for any real advance...and meaningful studies on this topic are virtually impossible to conduct while still remaining ethical, at least at our present level of technology. But in the meantime, it's utterly beyond me to understand how anyone can claim that we shouldn't be at least trying to help these folks. Or even on a more practical level, that our current approach is remotely cost effective.
