You Have Been Watching - Humiliation On Reality TV Shows

Charlie Brooker's new show 'You Have Been Watching' this week takes a look at those horrendous shows where people are trying to better themselves and are completely humiliated in the process. In this section I WTF'd out loud three times. What have we come to in this world?! Funny shit though

-So Sarah's in the lead is she? Well she could certainly use a turn on Dancing Your Ass Off. If you lost a few pounds maybe a man would be able to look at you without drinking his ass off first. And girl, lose those heavy nerd glasses, ever hear of laser surgery?

-What's up with that Peter Serafinowicz guy? 38 years old and dressed up like a gay 18 year old asian? You're an adult, dress like one! Where'd you get that fauxhawk? Are they giving free hair-gel down at the local glory hole, Nancy?

-And what's the deal with that Reg Hunter guy? A failed American comedian hiding out in the UK? Couldn't make it at home so he runs away to a foreign land where he'll be "accepted". Well they'll accept you just until the novelty wears off, buddy. Get a haircut, Dreadlocks are so 20th century.

-Canada: Quietly judging the world since 1867. (tm).

That Canada show cannot be real. I did like the second jury behind the second pane of glass bit tho...

Was he referring to the four of them, sitting and judging the judgers? Of course, looking on the four of them and judging is the videosift community...

woah.

turtles all the way down.

The dancing show actually seemed pretty positive, assuming all the contestants are (like this girl was) reasonably capable of dancing and comfortable doing so in front of an audience. I mean, it's complete horror show if they weren't - but assuming they do enjoy that part, it seems like it's wins all around. I'd never watch it, of course, but someone must. In fact, I imagine a non-negligible section of the audience may be thinking "Why does that nice thick dancing girl want to lose all her stuff?"

The guy yelling in the first show bit is cruel... but the fault is only in the degree. I think a lot of the point of the show is that some guy is going to pretty much force you to get fit (which is something you might be willing to endure some being yelled at for) and for some people that's going to require some prodding.

The last show is cruel to the person being judged, but perhaps more so to the people doing the judging. They're talking in a way that you talk when someone can't or won't hear you. But, because it's televised, that person can. And so can everyone else. I'm not saying they're being tricked into being jerks, but there's a performance-expected atmosphere there where it may seem appropriate to say some pretty horrible things. But those things will look horrible to other people viewing the show.

I mean, if you took every comment I've made on the Internet, and showed it to the subject of the comment and what not, there's many things I've said that would sound horrible. Now hopefully if I was on this show I'd have the good sense to talk constructively, but that would just mean I didn't get any camera time I imagine.

Peter Serafinowicz did seem pretty weird. Did you see his posture at the end? Trying to nonchalantly drape his arm over the top of the seat, but it was just too high. What is going on there? I know we're judging people for being judgemental, but that's not what I expected him to be like.

I think she's lovely.

I dunno what it is, but girls like that who have a sort of sing song voice and sound really nice i just can't help but find them lovely..

Oh and for the other guys above me, peter IS a really weird character. He's not trying to look cool or anything, he's just really slightly strange, if you look up other videos of him you'll notice the same thing. Occasionally he comes out with something rediculously funny though. Sort of an actor, sort of a comedian, done a lot of comedy acting, but also has a great ability for voices, he's done loads of voice-overs.

I *cough* may, or may not have watched that season of "The Biggest Loser"

and trust me.. that girl deserved it. The trainer (bob) is the one that every contestant wants to get because he's always positive and upbeat.. and that's what Joel did to him.

She was lazy, she made tons of excuses.. there was a challenge where they placed a single piece of fried chicken infront of the contestants and said "eat it, you get $100" testing their commitment to losing weight. She was the only person who ate it.

And it was a couples thing, so she was their with a friend.. and the friend who went HOME (Because they split all the pairs until mid-season, and the remaining contestants partners got brought back) lost more weight then she did.

so humiliation is one of the oldest forms of "civil" social control. I do find it weird that people want their humiliation on TV, but a lot of times these people SEEK to be on the show because of the results they may receive. And the humiliation makes a lot of people want to watch it. So, no humiliation, no TV show.

I don't watch reality TV, (damn you caught me, I do watch the odd cooking show for some reason,) but the Dance Your Ass Off show clip seemed awesome to me. That lady had more courage and perhaps happiness there than I may ever have and looked like she loved life.
