IIRC, the winner was the gentleman who went 5th in the order.

Rightfully so, since he does some mind-blowing footwork at about 3:48.

I can see why prim and proper folks of the time saw women doing this dance judged them as "Loose" corrupted by music and booze.

Now a days we have a different name for that kind of corruption. We call it "Fun"

The awesome thing is, these people are completely in another world right now. The scary thing is that when they are all dancing together, they're clearly still in their own worlds. Looks great as solo, but in a group it's mostly frantic and dangerous looking.
