Why Being a Reporter Hurts - A Compilation

Someone needs to post a "where this is from" guide!

And also maybe some stories to go with it, i'd love to know what happened to that coward wrestler (even though it was an old video), and also the woman who got ... her face set on fire?? by the motorbike.

It was actually John Stossel of 20/20 fame, not Geraldo Rivera.
Stossel joined 20/20 in 1981, this assault was in '84 and most likely part of a segment on the show.

I agree, I would love to know followups on some of those, like the guy who got hit by the aeroplane wing, he looked like he was out cold.

Also, if some are indeed fake, that'd be great to know too

Well the woman in the explosive motorbike stunt gone wrong is Anthea Turner a popular english tv presenter, from wikipedia:

"The short-lived Saturday morning children's show UP2U was a flop, and is chiefly remembered today for a motorcycle stunt that went wrong. She was to stand forward of a truck, the motorcycle would do its thing, then pyrotechnics would be ignited, then it would link back to the Studio. Unfortunately there was a big communications breakdown; at the last minute it was decided that Anthea would sit on the back of the truck, she would also take her cue from somebody behind the camera which, unknowingly to the camera crew, became the same cue used to ignite the pyrotechnics. She suffered burns and temporary hearing loss, which led to her successful lawsuit against the BBC."

The incident with the reporter being threatened by a drunken idiot can be read about here: http://www.tribune.ie/2007/08/05/99472.html

Sorry I cant recall how to fancify the link to make it look pretty!

Hey, it seems both are true - the reporter, as moodonia said, and the airplane guy. amazing. I watched the reporter-hit-by-motorcycle-on-fire frame by frame and could swear it is a fake. The last to second, the woman making funny noises, it seems she broke the collarbone. That sound is now a huge hit in ringtones

All things considered, reality is less believable than fiction.

Supposedly Stossel won $425,000 in a civil suit against guy.
Great mashup btw. Nice mix of older and newer clips.

Wow, I ought to provoke someone to slap me if the reward is that high.
Excessive civil suit awards create perverse incentives.

Man, I couldn't help it. I really tried.

But when neuralnoise tells us that the sound of the woman making noises with the broken collar bone is now a ringtone hit, I just had to laugh.
Out loud!
For a while!

Aah, the shit that amuses us...

The second one is from Middletown, NY... very near me. I don't know what that jackass was doing, but I'm guessing it was just before a major blizzard hit the area. Usually we get clobbered like twice a winter with a several-foot snowfall, but for some reason it's considered news every time.

I'm continuously amazed at the poor reaction times of reporters. How exactly does a prop-plane catch you by surprise? It's not even a case of being unable to avoid the collision in most of these; most of them don't have any reaction at all.

here here VBM (Videosiftbannedme).

Anyway, I imagine these videos resulted in a number of LARGE lawsuits. Honestly, if you slap/punch a media-member, you are officially screwed, and rightly so. That wrestler at the beginning was probably completely bankrupted by that lawsuit unless the interviewer was "nice" and let it go. He's lucky he didn't wind up in jail for assault. I'd have given him a friendly ridge-hand to his temple and see how he likes unconsciousness for a few hours. Most people, however, would put the man in prison and take him for all he's worth... talk about an easy case... yeah, your honor, we have video of the defendant attacking the plaintiff.

I am however a bit worried that the dude hit by the airplane wing might be dead.... I'll assume he's not for the reason that the vid has survived this long. still, ouch, paralysis is serious business.
