exactly, anyone who's played pool a bit has had this sort of thing happen when you shoot the ball too hard... just seems strange for a pro to have that happen to him.

no. almost all rules of billiards are based on balls on the table .. live until (5 second count) or (until opponent shoots). If it bounces out it a miss, but not a table scratch, because a rail was contacted. Most rules address this because it is that common. I assume this is 8-ball, so the opponent probably ran out their ball and sunk the 8 and won that rack.
