i didn't care to touch them. I just automatically took them for granite.

The turtle looks kind of curious rather than aggressive. Turtles are horrifying when they choose to go for stuff.

Maybe it's reputation preceeds it? Not worth getting a chunk taken out of your tongue.

When I was a kid I picked up a huge snapping turtle....backwards. It chomped into my belly and took a chunk. Those lions are smart to be wary.
