Wumpussays...I didn't realize Nike made missles.
choggiesays......Luckily the weapons weren'y fully assembled"...Damn! That sideways truckslide on closed circuit....Priceless!
couplandsays...I'm starting to like this guy. "Otherwise, the explosion could have consumed the entire MOUNTAIN!" You've gotta love someone who doesn't feel their show even needs to *appear* to be grounded in reality.
buggytobenotsays...Actually, for obvious reasons, weapons of this type don't get shipped in their fully battle-ready configuration. The explosion you saw was merely that of the primers.
Think of it as a bullet, which has the primer, and then the explosive chemical which propels the projectile forward. Only, in a missile, the chemical mass is used to detonate the warhead instead of launch a projectile. In most missiles, the majority of the casing is used for storing fuel (usually a dry chemical fuel) that burns slowly enough that it can be used for propelling the weapon, but in the very tip is the explosive charge.
The charge has to be ignited somehow, so a smaller explosive is used to ignite the chemicals in the warhead and cause explosion. Any unspent fuel can help too. If those missiles had been fully functional, it very well could have taken down the tunnel and much of the mountain. What you saw pushing cars and debris out of the tunnel was just a result of the much smaller ignition charges set off by the vehicle fire. Those were pretty large missiles, so expect a high yield.
