Tough Mudder - A Run Like No Other

My wife and I are running this this weekend in Florida. There are several each year throughout the states. The course is designed by British Special Forces, and proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Project, a truly worthy cause. More info here:

I've been thinking about doing one in VT next year, if other athletic pursuits don't interfere.
It seems like a pretty cool thing; though coming from the viewpoint of a traditional runner it's hard not to see it as a bit gimmicky (ike I said, I'd still like to do it)...

Not as gimmicky as this, though: http://runforyourlives.com/

On the surface, it DOES seem a bit gimmicky to me as well. The zombie one looks fun, and there seems to be a rash of these things popping up all over the place just this year. I wonder if it's really a new trend, or "blue car syndrome..." Either way, everyone I've talked to who's done it says that it's incredibly challenging and not for the faint of heart.

We ran a Warrior Dash (3 mile version of the Tough Mudder) earlier this year and were a bit disappointed - it was fun, don't get me wrong, but it felt like a frat party which happened to have a mud pit and some joggers. I forget who said it, but the summed up the difference as "you can do the Warrior Dash with a hangover, but to do the Tough Mudder you have to sign a Death Waiver first."

Agreed on the gimmicky, but could be fun. Amazing how "hardcore" something can look when you add fancy high-def slow-mo and pounding music.. I remember there be a similar race involving dressing like a viking and running a similar course. You got a free viking helmet at the end.. and beer. 12 miles with obstacles would be pretty grueling though. half-marathons without the obstacles are enough for me thanks

That makes sense. I have a friend who is unwilling (at least right now) to do the Tough Mudder, but he did a Warrior Dash this summer and said it was "easy."

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to do a TM at some point... =)

That was the Warrior Dash. Turn in your shoe chip for a free Coors Light at the end. The mud tasted better.

The scariest obstacle that I saw was at 0:55. Crawling through a small tube that is 3/4 full of water could be terror inducing.

All of the other running, jumping, carrying, climbing stuff just looks fun.

The Warrior Dash was very easy, in their videos they made the jumping through fire look a lot more challenging than it really was on the course.

The Merrell Down & Dirty Mud Run was pretty fun, they had a slick wall similar to the one in this video, but quite a bit smaller and their cargo net climbs were pretty big.

I just completed the TM in the Tristate this past november. I've never shook so violently from near hypothermia in my entire life. Run time Temp was 47 degrees. It was by far the most awesome thing I have ever done and it was the most organized thing I've seen. 18,000 racers going off without a hitch. The obstacles range from hard to easy. The 10k volt running field was a little rough with no shirt on but the race is definitely worth it.

It's also for a great cause. For anyone wanting or thinking about doing it, I recommend it 100%. The obstacles can look scary, but there was not one point in the entire race where if you needed help, anyone from a teammate to a random stranger would gladly help you under or over it. The camaraderie is amazing. Like it was said above, it isn't for the feint of heart. It is still at it's core a 12 mile run, so definitely get some cardio in before hand but you have alot of time to do it.

I can't praise this race enough. Do it! Do it now!

Here's a link if you'd like to support Wounded Warriors. (I profit in no way from any donations, and if any sifter feels that I'm violating any Sift rule by asking here, I'll gladly remove the link.)

I want you to remove the link because you're helping people. Also...move to France you anti-american scum!

I ran the Beaver Creek Tough Mudder. Was a lot of fun. Is true that its much more demanding physically and much different experience than a Warrior Dash. A couple of the obstacles can be gimmicky, but others truly are a challenge (I think the water temp when I ran was 38) and some are just damn fun (ie giant slip n' slide down the side of the mountain).

Its much more fun if you get a group and do it as a team. They seem to be well run events from the one I did and as others have pointed out, its for a good cause.
