I find this to be a really good example of the difference in male and female thought patterns.
The male goes into "problem solving mode" and the female goes into "feeling mode".

The male calmly, or at least appears to be calm and collected, does everything to increase the chance of solving, or in this case surviving, the problem.
Take in your surroundings and see:
Where is it safe and where is it not? In the car surrounded by glass, bad. outside in a ditch, still bad but a hell of a lot better than in a blender.
What can I do to increase my chances of surviving if the tornado hits us? Equalize pressure inside the car so that the glass doesn't implode/explode as fast and makes it easier to get out of the car if it is overturned.
Tell other person/spouse/friend/whatever what to do in a calm and collected way.
Don't give in as you know what has to be done.
Don't do something for the sake of doing something, wait until you know what to do.

The female feels fear and as we all know "Fear is the mindkiller" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bene_Gesserit#Litany_against_fear), heck I would probably be scared as hell too but feeling scared never stopped a bullet or a tornado.

I was not out to put down females and if my comment came across like that then I was not clear enough, my bad.

I was simply talking about the biological differences in how males and females think, see links (first 3 things I found but there is a lot of research on this subject being done), due to being different, biologically, and having evolved with different pressures acting on us. It is not strange that we think differently and it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Why do males go into "problem solving mode" and not "feeling mode" IMO? For example when a sabre toothed tiger pounces you you have to act rationally and solve the problem, if you cower in fear you get eaten. Evolution favoured the clearheaded, fast thinking and problem solving minds of the male hunters over the ones who were slower on the uptake or felt first and acted second.
Different roles (think hunter/gatherer times) --> Different brains --> Different thought patterns.
Otherwise every single person in the world would think exactly the same way.

Exactly which comment is it that are you referring to should he stand behind? I can only see one comment he made, and it's the one you quoted... For that matter, which actions should he be "growing a backbone" and "taking responsibility" for? There is something to be said for grammar and delivery, but yes, that is pretty condescending.

There is nothing in these articles about men acting logical and going into problem-solving mode, rather that they have a more activated fight or flight response and women a more empathetic response. Read the article and you will see that you are going way too far in your conclusions (http://www.cfn.upenn.edu/perfusion/stress.pdf).
