One could be tricked into thinking that old soldiers no longer hear the bugle, that old football players don't tense at the kickoff, that retired musicians can't hear the tap-tap-tap of the conductor's baton on a musical stand anymore.

Or--to preserve life and limb, you might consider that a retired racehorse doesn't know he's retired.
