The worst observation in the history of the internet

From source: "In 1993, an early Internet user named John Allen explained that the Internet was and would continue to be a place of remarkable civility and courtesy."

"Then people realised that they could reveal their inner-jerk without fear of a punch in the face, and an idealist's vision was torn down."

Seriously... The 'net was great when we shy technical folks could all come out of our shell a little bit and cared what others thought of us so the practice of restraint was fairly widespread initially. Then the internet became available to the masses, and suddenly people forgot how to suppress their jerk side as civilised attempts to be heard went unnoticed.

PS An overwhelming desire to be rooted? Somewhat amusing given that most systems were running some form of Unix back then

Of course, he was totally right at the time. Even as late as 2000, maybe even 2003 or so, the net was way more pleasant than it is now. Widespread broadband availability has made it easy and the launch of Youtube and Myspace have given dickholes places to congregate en masse.

He was probably referring to early Usenet, which was in fact a pretty civilized place. Of course, it was unusual for people to go anonymous on Usenet at the time. Most posters used their real names and official work or school email addresses.

It speaks volumes that the kids posting this video with this title can't even conceive of a civil internet. It says more about them than John Allen.

Just a note as to when this was recorded (1993)- The graphic at 0:07 shows the reference to the Newsgroups.
Newsgroups at that time were strongly moderated and mis-users were tossed-out frequently.

All of the &%#@ examples look like they came from the internet - and possibly more recent sites such as youtube.

I'm just pointing out "apples to oranges" because I don't think (as far as I can tell) he was predicting the future of internet. He was commenting on the current use at the time -- and at that time, Newsgroups were the popular "communities" -- this was before the Trolls broke down the doors and let themselves in.

A miss-represented, out of context quote, rigged to make it look like something it isn't for humor's sake - the art of persuasion if you will, just laugh and move on, I can't take this miss-prediction seriously as it's presented..

I'm pretty sure it was the kids who screwed it all up.

The internet was great before the kids showed up. Even for a while after they showed up, when they were all still in their AOL chat rooms. But you could see the slide happen when they got out of their cages.

It started in every pleasant forum when a kid showed up one day acting like a 12 year old in a bar, disrupting the atmosphere. That we easily dealt with by admins...but then they kept coming and coming and coming...like foul mouthed tribbles..multiplying until they filled the internet up with their obnoxious presence. Then the contagean spread, infecting normally rational adults until they cursing and screaming all over the interwebs like overgrown children.

Of course, it's all over now. There are few bastions of civility left and even those places are in a constant battle against the tide. Whatever.
