The only thing I would add is that assault numbers across countries as to a measure of violence levels are generally unreliable as different countries define assaults differently.

Also I'm constantly amazed by the US's seeming fascination with mass shootings as if that is the only problem the country has with guns rather than the general, incredibly high level of gun deaths. Chalk it up to the effectiveness of the NRA or that deaths in black neighborhoods are deemed 'not newsworthy'.
