"I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees." - George W Bush, Sept 1st 2005

This report discusses a meeting on Sunday.

On Saturday morning local radio and television broadcasts were saying to expect a storm hit like Betsy (1965) which hit the city directly and flooded it. They were predicting Katrina would hit the city directly.

I starting packing before the official news conferences took place on Saturday. By early afternoon I was on the road. Some folks I know waited until early hours on Sunday to leave.

New Orleans avoided a direct hit by Katrina but was flooded when the US Government's levees broke. It was the US governments failure to maintain the levees that destroyed New Orleans, not Katrina. What's screwed up is that the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which was destroyed by Katrina, is getting a proportionately larger amount of rebuilding money from the federal government where it wasn't even their fault. I guess it helps to have a republican govenor.
