I could be wrong, and I'm happy to be educated on this. Maybe gay is more about self-identification.

My understanding is that they're men, as opposed to transgendered males who feel female. And it goes back a long way in Thai culture and is more readily accepted.

Ok come on...is EVERY Thai Ladyboy hot? There have GOT to be some ugly ones but I've never seen one.

You make a fine point. I only wish we could be curious AND remove moral judgement about it all (so much of the gender classification talk falls into this trap it seems). Me? I'm more fascinated by how this guy thinks he's found the perfect mate....she/he could be a dolphin for all I care. I don't think I'm completely alone in that more singular fascination...it just somehow seems to be perverted by questions that don't really have any relevance to the subjects of such matters...the anatomy of his chosen partner is largely moot...to him it seems and to me. I was expressing a desire for it to become so for everyone else.

And acceptance of ladyboys really depends on who you are talking to. When I was in Thailand, I remember an old man who was complaining about all the ladyboys he sees now, and how he hates it. He said they hardly existed 20 years ago, but are everywhere [in Thailand] now.

A man who dresses, acts and tries to shape his/her body to be like that of a woman, and the narrator even refers to them as her, iirc. Conversely you can find plenty of gay guys (perhaps even the majority) that still pretty much dress and act like guys, they don't think of themselves as women, just gay, I would consider that to be a distinctive difference.

No. The ladyboys in question here think of themselves as female and have always done so. The only thing male about them anymore is their genitals, which in the end isn't as important as some may think. It's how they feel about themselves and how they express themselves which defines their gender. A gay man is a man that is attracted to men, not (just) a penis.

It definitely is about perception but the man was a lady before the transformation. I *think* I can see this as not being gay. The sexual identity of a situation like this is much more heterosexual than that. Funny, they didn't ask her whether she thought she was gay?
