Bill Moyers: Tea Party Organizer Is Epitome Of Privilege

Moyers goes after FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey -- one of the key figures using large industry donations to fund "Tea Party" rallies around the country, such as the the 9/12 march in Washington DC last week. - Huffington

The other big group besides FreedomWorks that is funding the tea party protests is "Americans for Prosperity". They've started calling themselves "Patients United" when they talk about health care. The funding is not coming from patients. Look it up.

The other group I keep seeing lately is "60 plus", the conservative alternative to AARP. AARP says that since members don't have to pay dues to "60 plus", they are mainly funded by the pharmaceutical industry.

I fail to see how the wealth & background of the guy is an issue. This is a cause he believes in. Small government. Low taxes. Individual freedom. A society that doesn't stifle entreprenuers. When you beleive in a cause, you put up your money & time to fight for it. And - ideally - your cause is one that millions of Americans agree with and so you use your time & money to organize them into a powerful political force that can't be ignored.

This is no different than the Astroturf that organized & sponsored the Iraq War protests. No one seemed to care that the anti-war protests were bought & paid for, organized, and planned by ANSWER, Code Pink, and other big political donors. That's just how things work. I didn't whine about that when the Iraq protests were being ginned up by neolib groups, and I don't see why it is an issue with the teabaggers that Dick Armey is throwing his weight behind it. It's a cause he agrees with. Big deal.

He fights against a health care option he has used/benefited from his entire adult life. His wealth and background only exacerbate his distance from the 'average American' he claims to represent. If privatized health care was so much better, he would have been using it.

Nail in the coffin ? Look at his top contributors:

Of course, you're completely free to believe it's all just a happy coincidence.

If you'd like to tell me what powerful financial interests funded Code Pink or ANSWER

Ever hear of a rather well-to-do guy going by the name of George Soros? Believe it when I say that Dick Armey has got nothing on Soros when it comes to putting his fingers in the political pie. But this is America. Anyone who wants can support whatever cause they wish, and they don't need to justify themselves to you or me. We haven't yet come to a point of intolerance where supporting a cause is a crime, have we? Hypocrisy? Pht - he's a politician. That means he's a liar, a hypocrite, and a cheat. What of it? The same applies to Obama, Pelosi, Ried, and every other politician in Washington.

Weak argument WP... "He is a crook but so are these other guys, so it's not that bad"... you yourself have railed against that exact argument from others... very weak.

A great many politicians are in fact corrupt and biased. That does not mean they shouldn't be called out for it. I also don't recall anyone suggesting this is somehow a crime. Other than you that is. No they are pointing out the obvious biased and lying behind this 'grass-roots' campaign and the hypocrisy of Army to stand up and say the things he does while reaping the rewards from the other side. And for that you've chosen to excuse it entirely and defer to the 'the other side is just as bad' argument. Well played Sir... well played.

Politicians are elected (or not), therefore there is a level of control that the people can hold over them. Liars, crooks, hypocrites, whatever, if we elect them, then we have the government we've asked for.

These folks aren't elected, and yet they are able to sway policy and thinking by way of lies and vast sums of money. We have no way to make them "go away" except to dis-empower them by exposing them for the liars and hypocrites that they are.
