TISM - Greg! The Stop Sign

exurb1a's vid on The Term Paper reminded me of this song from 1995. The relevent part starts at 1:09:

Some time in the next ten thousand years
A comet's gonna wipe out all trace of Man
I'm banking on it coming before
My end of year exam

YouTube description:

"Greg! The Stop Sign" is TISM's parody of the infamous TAC public service advertisement in which in the original advert, moments before the car accident, the female passenger yells out "Darren!". No idea why it was changed to Greg, but then again Greg rears it's fugly head again when almost 15 years later Humphrey B. Flaubert (Damian Cowell) in his new band, ROOT! writes his ode to lead singer of The Beasts of Bourbon/Cruel Sea fame, called "I Wish I Was Tex Perkins". This song as the memorable lyrics of "A thousand girls call him in the night....nobody ever calls him Greg".

Did you ever wondered where that mid break instrumental piece came from?
Well it the band cover of The Shadows instrumental hit single "FBI" from 1961.

"Greg! The Stop Sign" peaked at #10 in Triple J's Hottest 100 of 1995 and it was the second single from the album 'Machiavelli and the Four Seasons', which was TISM's highest charting album. There was a hidden agenda in the music video, as it was supporting the "Save the St Kilda Club" movement. The music video was directed by Mark Hartley.

LYRICS
_______

The guy who slagged the football team
Those yobs were not for him
He turns into a real estate agent
Who believes in discipline

The guy who's the first to use cocaine
The wild boy breaking free
He'll end up in a court of law
As a prosecuting Q.C.

Remember the school captain?
Success was a matter of time
I can hear her now as she screams
"Greg, you missed the stop sign"

Forget Snoop Doggy Dog
Forget ol' Ice T
The true word out on the streets
Is produced by the T.A.C.

What good's the use of striving?
As life's road in front unravels
We get to do the driving
But don't choose the direction we travel

Do your homework or wag for weeks,
graffiti the Dandedong line
It don't matter much when you hear that scream
"Greg, you missed the stop sign"

Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!

Some time in the next ten thousand years
A comet's gonna wipe out all trace of Man
I'm banking on it coming before
My end of year exam

The rich kid, becomes a junkie
The poor kid, an advertiser
What a tragic waste of potential
Being a junkie's not so good, either

Your folks worked hard for what you've got
You're the fruit of their vine
But who cares what you sow when what you reap is
Greg, you missed the stop sign?

Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!

Bought a car just the other day
Man, could that baby run?
But you know what they always say
There's always a better one

Got a tumor in my brain
It's creeping to my lungs
And I've searched around in vain
Can't find me a better one

Hardwired into everyone's head
Is the person they're gonna be
Growing up is not a matter of choice
It's a matter of wait and see

So kids, yeah, you can do it
You can be the best
Girls can do anything
You can pass the test

I'm okay, you're okay, we're okay, we're fine
I thought I heard a semi-trailer
Greg, you missed the stop sign

Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!

Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
