Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story by Todd Haynes

Indie director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine) created this deeply moving film about Karen Carpenter's unsuccessful battle with anorexia. As he had no budget, he had the brilliant idea of filming the whole thing with Barbie dolls. And, believe it or not, it works. You forget that they are dolls, and get caught up in the story.

It has never been officially released. The official reason is that Haynes used Carpenters music without permission, but the real reason permission has never been granted is that Richard Carpenter comes across as a jerk.
