Students Can't Wear American Flag On Cinco De Mayo

Students in California are threatened with suspension when they wear American flag themed clothing on Cinco de Mayo.

Wow. Young Turks you are fucking idiots. This was pure racism, just like the way the british union jack is used by racists in the UK. It is about intent. Those kids were racist red necks who hate Mexican Americans. Wrong, very wrong.

One of those situations thats all about context. The VP made a stupid decision and he's been reprimanded for it. The issue got blown way out of purportion with this one.

1. Dudes were trolling. The "offended" got trolled.
2. VP overreacted. VP got nailed for it.
3. This wasn't a Mexican vs American race issue, it was a teenager douchebag vs the status quo issue that happen to involve an American Flag on Cinco de Mayo. I seen it back in my day when I was in highschool and I'm sure it'll keep going well into the future. We still have clowns rolling the confederate flag up in Idaho...never once left the state, but all hail "southern" heritage and what not.

It should have been handled differently and if the VP's decision was to be upheld, then they should have been prepared with a better statement knowing what the climate is right now.

"You can't wear patriotic clothing." Ohhhh, right...thats going to go down with no blowback. Awesome job.

Sounds like the school needs to take a step back and handle whats happening with their students in a more productive manner, but I suppose thats easier said than done.

Wearing the American flag is insulting to the flag and the U.S.A., just like allowing it to be on the gound, flying it at night without lighting, flying a non-weatherized flag in storms, or flying any other flag higher or in front of the American flag on U.S. territory, or displaying it upside down except in cases of emergency as a signal for help.
From http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagcode.htm
d.The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.
j.No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform.

Forget intent, that's thought crime. This was disrespectful on ANY day, the only issue I have is they limited their rules to May 5th. Schools should teach students to be proper, respectful citizens, they did when I was in school, it was called Civics.

^The flag code: arbitrary rules dictating what it means to have respect for something. Expression is a wonderful thing. For me, a flag pole is to much a bother, I would much rather my USA tee-shirt. The flag code is silly for me...example.

"The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing." Section 8j

I hate to break it to you, but the flag is not alive...I don't care what section 8j says. The rest of it is just as silly as that one code. The flag code used to have a Bellamy salute, which reminded to many people of Nazis so they changed it. In other words, there is nothing "holy" about the flag code, it is just a bunch of rules some people came up with. It is about as "in touch" with people as anything could be from 1923.
