Were both of these made at a similar time period? The Japanese version, being a movie, looks like it would have had a much larger budget than a serialised TV show.

The dialogue in the US one is terrible by comparison. I think that in Japan, anime has more of an older and broader audience. Cartoons in the west are considered 'kids stuff' and treated accordingly by their producers.

Keep in mind that one is a movie and the other is a series. Animation standards are higher for movies; more in-between frames per second.
