Star Trek TNG Bluray Old Vs New - Unbelievable Difference

Side-by-side video comparison. The old CG effects were recreated (which only had an SD source). Clips from "Encounter at Farpoint" pilot of Star Trek: The Next Generation in HD.

Oh my that first episode with the flying squids! At the time I was gobsmacked by how bad that was. And it took about two years before they showed a decent episode.

BTW what is up with Q's hair in the New version?

PostalBlowfishsays...

They should really start with seasons that don't suck if they expect to generate interest from fans. I watched a sample of this, but only because they remastered it and I was curious. I would probably not purchase Season 1 on bluray.

Although I have to hand it to them, I've had many shows I wished would release to bluray who gave the excuse that they didn't want to redo their CGI, it's nice to see someone actually willing to do it.

Ok, it's an obvious troll, but what the hell, I'll bite.
Why? Do you actually have a reason or do you just want the kids of your blurry lawn?

The old version already exists, is fine and watchable, beloved by millions of people and takes no additional work to produce; whereas the new version, which can barely be distinguished in side-by-side comparisons and not at all in normal viewing conditions, needed a bunch of wasted effort to make. It has consumed human labour to no purpose. Also, it is on Blu-ray so worse by definition.

Obviously I say this as an adult who watches everything in the lowest resolution available. Sometimes I even read books with no pictures at all. 1080p gaylords may have other (wrong) ideas.

I am actually pretty surprised you went for that.

So I guess I was right the first time.

I prefer the old one because the effects are part of the time it came from. Having advanced graphics is anachronistic and takes me out of the story.

(and I don't have a lawn)

It's not the effects that bother me as much as the crappy video quality. It's blurred and the colour grading is awful.

Sylvester_Inksays...

The new one will be, without a doubt, much better. The old version was edited together using VCRs in order to get the episodes done on a tight schedule, so the quality was pretty bad. (Worse than the quality of TOS at times.) Since they are reediting from scratch, that alone will result in much better quality than we've ever seen. Add to that the excellent color correction, cleanup, cg enhancement, etc that they did to the remastered TOS, and it will end up being quite impressive indeed.
Pay attention, George Lucas. This is how you remaster your old work the RIGHT way!

Oh, and in case you haven't seen what they did with TOS, they handle the effects with a light touch. It isn't too distracting or anachronistic at all. It's very respectful of the source material.

budzossays...

I will own this eventually but holding off for now. I've got kind of a backlog of movies, games, comics, and books building up. I will wait until I can savour it and maybe by then there will be a couple more seasons available.

messengersays...

I'm on the fence about that. I half want to see it looking good, and half want to see it the way it was. The only thing I really don't like visually about TNG is the foam rocks, and I doubt any amount of light touch editing will fix that.>> ^ChaosEngine:

The origanal series had way better scripts. I gave up on the newer stuff after Tasha Tar vanished.

Pity, because TNG really didn't get good until the 2nd season (i.e. just after you stopped watching). I'd argue that the TNG at it's best was the best Star Trek ever made. But I don't really consider myself a trekkie, so YMMV.

Fletchsays...

Hmmm... space jellies in love, or big-brained, telepathic Talosian aliens with pulsing head veins? Added bonus of "The Cage"... Spock is a DICK! C'mon TNG'ers, it's a frickin' GIANT JELLY FISH (with feelings)! It's been done! At least make it a dangerous Irukandji or Box (or something).

As @ChaosEngine said, TNG got a lot better than this, and I became a fan. However, I grew up with TOS, so it'll always be the best Star Trek in my mind.

braschlosansays...

I am not ashamed to admit that I will download all of these as lower than blueray quality rips. I would NEVER buy these box sets at full price but would enjoy rewatching the original series in the correct order.

Even a 480p rip of this new edition will look great.

kceaton1says...

I've already seen the new version and I can attest that it is far better in MANY ways, not just ones you would expect. Though the screen is at an aspect of 4:3 the resolution is extremely improved. The color is better. The effects have ALL been redone (including backgrounds, such as the planets and other things of that nature), including MANY of the models. They definitely put a lot of effort into this--the video REALLY does not show you or give the new version justice at all.

Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...

Mostly this. In actuality, all of the Rick Berman Star Trek seasons (from TNG to Enterprise) have good episodes and very BAD episodes in them. Season one was predominantly the bad episodes, but there were a few really good ones in it. By season two the balance shifted and it was about 50/50 good/bad episodes. Then by season 3 they hit their stride and it was mostly good episodes with only a few bad ones here and there.

But yeah, if they really want this to fly they should have started with Season 3. I really hope that they keep this up because I'd love to get Deep Space Nine in Blu-Ray, but I don't expect the effort will sustain that long. They are charging and arm and a leg for Star Trek seasons, and I'm just not willing to pay more than 30 to 40 bucks a season for ANY show.
