persephonesays...Despite the Shinto belief in the sacredness of all elements of nature and the existence of nature spirits for things like mountains and rivers, Japan followed quickly in the footsteps of nations like the U.S. in becoming a highly industrialised nation, to the detriment of its forests and rivers.
The message of the struggle of the spirit of the land to exist despite the overwhelming misuse of humans is integral to both this and other Miyazaki films like Tonari no totoro. Fantastic films, both, with a great environmental message.
