Speeding on the Autobahn

BMW 850CSi speeding on the autobahn! It is legal to go this fast there - just don't let anyone get in your way!
TheGenksays...

The video distorts the feeling of speed. If you drive 250km/h yourself it actually feels way slower, more like you're only going 100km/h.
And to people that say "why would you even want to go that fast":
because we're in the 21. century, progress and all that jazz and more importantly, because we fucking can!

Oh, and I can't resist the temptation of a friendly jab at our sifters from the "land of the free" (USA):
Tell me, how free are you to drive fast on highways again?

We have a 136 km/hr highway in Texas now, that's the fastest.

Land of the Free? Are you running for president? I think only millionaire candidates use that kind of speech now.

In America, this would go in the EIA channel.

Just because it feels like 100 km/h, doesn't mean that you're going 100 km/h.

I wouldn't trust myself to drive at those speeds, and unless you're a professional race car driver, I sure as heck wouldn't trust someone else to (especially teenagers who have rich parents to buy them fast cars).

This stuff really depends on the freeway. A curvy highway in an urban center is definitely not ideal for higher speeds but in emptier areas where there are less cars and straighter pathing, controlling a vehicle at higher speeds is a lot easier. The one thing I would like to know is the accident statistics for highways like that and how many involve significant highspeeds.

Stationed in Germany, I had to cross a section of the autobahn on foot nearly every day during my morning run. It was the very definition of "not fun".

Somebody should have told you that it is illegal to cross the autobahn on foot...!

Pretty sure it was very early in the morning, would explain the emptiness of the autobahn (it actually is pretty hard to find a stretch to go that fast during the day) and the excessive amounts of bugs .

TheGenksays...

@TheFreak: Crossing the Autobahn on foot is actually against the law.

@deathcow: Again, friendly jab. A joke in light of all the "I don't want the government to tell me what I can and can't do"-rhetoric videos from America you find cross the net.

@aimpoint:
Accidents on german highways in 2011 was at 6.4% of all car accidents. With 31% of total traffic in germany being on highways thats pretty damn low. And as far as I can discern of those 6.4% about 60-70% involve trucks which are limited to 100km/h(and the outer right lane, for the most part).

Don't really agree on the speed thing, it depends on the car really, I remember doing 180 in my old Levin and it felt exactly like 180 - scary as hell.

Friendly jab back: That Adolf fellow was a real automotive liberator eh? Maybe we should have left you all to your freedom?

I would love to do this. I like driving a lot. I use it as a form of therapy. This would be fucking perfect for me. My car is governed at 186mph but with a tune to remove that limit, it will do 200. I would go back and forth on the autobahn every friggin day if I had the opportunity.

But yes, a blowout would suck. That's why most cars built to go this fast use high quality tires. How many accidents per year happen on the autobahn? I'd be willing to bet they are far fewer than happen on the average highway in the USA.

The annual fatality rate (2.7 per billion km in 2009) is consistently lower than that of most other superhighway systems, including the US Interstates (4.5 in 2009). Furthermore, a 2005 study by the German government found that Autobahn sections without speed limits had the same accident rate as those with speed limits.

To whom it may concern,

I'm well aware that it's illegal to cross the autobahn on foot. I was well aware of it at the time. But it happened to be in the way and I was never the guy at the front of the formation making decisions about the route. I'm sure he knew too though.

So for anyone who believes the autobahn cannot be crossed on foot, because it's illegal, I'm here to tell you...it can be crossed and it has been crossed many times...and there's a good reason it's illegal.

I took my new Camaro SS up to 150 mph a few months after I got it. It was scary fast, but oh so much fun.

@TheGenk So your measure of the freedom of a country is measured in how fast they can drive on their roads? Seriously?

wax66says...

I'm shocked that nobody has screamed about the illegal activity in this video. Anyone who has lived in Germany should know that what this guy did is illegal, and if the polizei had seen him do what he did, he would have been fined.

To those of you who haven't lived in Germany, on a two-lane road make sure that you stay in the RIGHT LANE unless you're passing.

If only Americans followed that rule.

Forher2mesays...

Ze Germans. Ja ja ja! Derp: why would anyone want to drive this fast? Because its exhilarating particularly if you own a high performance car. Clearly Derp owns a geo metro or something. It's the deep question as: why would anyone need a gun? Sigh, I weep for humanity. Oh yeah, because we fucking can. Remember, going slow doesn't mean it's safer and won't kill anyone.
