Orange County is the Florida of California

"There's no corona. It's a hoax." The mask-shortage guys went to San Clemente.

Pretty much a litany of misinformed, confused, scientifically illiterate people.

(Edited the Title when it was pointed out to me that Orange County is a more accurate geographic descriptor---thanks all)

Same can be said of FL, I'm glad my County instituted a mask mandate back in June, as our positivity rate has dropped from 17-18% then to now 4-5%. Be responsible people, even if you don't have a mask mandate in effect, it helps...

Orange County, not Southern California.

The majority of SoCal isn't dumb like these people. They are dumb in completely different ways.

There was similar backlash and claims that car accidents were a hoax when wearing a seatbelt became law.

Nils Bohlin received death threats for inventing a safer belt, giving the design away and perpetuating the hoax. The deepstate now credits the man with saving millions of lives from a hoax.

Dark dark times that lead to the world we live in today. Never again!

As a former NorCal'er, I can't tell you how much I loathe SoCal. Every now and then, a call goes out to split the state horizontally at around Fresno. Fuck that! Split it at Big Sur and let them have all the shit between King City and the Mexican border.

newtboysays...

Screw that!
As a true NorCaler, in Humboldt, we don't want Sacramento and the bay area. We are a completely different animal up here from those central Californians.
Split it at Big Sur, and again at Ukiah. They can keep the big port, pollution, and traffic, we'll keep the forests and unspoiled rivers.

You know what? Fair enough.

Can you explain to me how it is that this particular place is so...I mean, for lack of a better descriptor--unscientific?

That's a great question. The area is semi affluent and known for being pretty conservative.

My guess is that along with people feeling like they are personally successful they are being fed media that describes the progression of scientific understanding as "proof" that scientists who are forming recommendations don't know what they are talking about.

With this type of narrative clouding the purpose and reasons behind the recommendations these people feel like their own success makes them a better judge of what they should be doing for everyone's health and safety.

Add in a little talk about freedom and stigma of being a nerd and you have large social groups that deny the need to follow scientific recommendations that are meant to statistically reduce the broad impact of the virus' affects.

This is disturbing and sickening.

I live in Orange County, and my wife and I discuss every single day the madness of all the masses of insane people like those in this video.

These fucking idiots disgust me. There needs to be a lot more coverage of stories like that of Richard Rose, who just like morons in this video scoffed at it because he thought it was a hoax... then he got COVID-19 and died.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/richard-rose-covid-face-mask/

The Orange County Board of Education (OCBOE) is even pushing for all schools to return to full in-class sessions for all kids and with no masks. Since our governor has mandated virtual-only classes for counties that are out of control, the OCBOE has decided to sue the state. I can't begin to wrap my head around that kind of rationale (or lack thereof).

(Fortunately, each city is not obliged to do what the OCBOE recommends, and our city will have virtual-only classes available for the entire school year.)

Rose’s Facebook posts in his final days indicated a rapid decline in his health.

On July 1, he wrote that he had been tested for COVID-19 after feeling “very sick the past few days.” Later the same day, Rose confirmed he had tested positive for the virus, and had been placed under quarantine for 14 days. Poignantly, he added, “Sucks because I had just started a new job.” The following day, he wrote ominously “This covid shit sucks! I’m so out of breath just sitting here.” Two days later, on July 4, Rose died at the age of 37.

It's very odd. I think about--what for better lack of a phrase--would be "Eisenhower" Republicans and how they believed in science, raced Sputnik, oversaw and endorsed advances in vaccines (Polio etc)---and find it puzzling how things fell away to this. Very weird.

Reagan happened.

That's when Republicans became the party that worked to serve the interests of corporations and wealthy individuals. To do that they needed to get people to vote against their own interests. To accomplish this, they've resorted to increasingly extreme methods to attract votes from easily manipulated people.

When people tell me they don't need a mask I usually end the conversation in a professional way telling them "OK, I'll see ya later but, you may not see me."
