Skateboarding Fails at 1,000 FPS

An excellent use for slow motion capture.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Skateboarding is the art of falling.

Some of my favorite skate videos are the ones where they show you all of the fail attempts that lead to the successful sequences.

My takeaway here is that humans are faster than we give ourselves credit for. In everyone of those falls the guys did something to try and protect their bodies (if not their individual limbs).

Yep. I don't think I saw one decent head knock, but in the slow mo's you can see the guys protecting their heads purely by how they held them away from the ground. Most rolled out fairly well when they had too much momentum.

It's funny just how much worse the falls seem in slow motion. When played back at normal speed at the end they're just 'meh, get up yah pansy' type of falls.

Interesting, because I had the exact opposite impression. In the slow-mo, I thought it really accented how well/quickly their reactions put less critical / shock absorbing body parts down to take the initial jarring contact. Hands and feet take some initial hit, then arms bent at the elbow, ass, roll to back, keep the head up.

At full speed, I noticed that I'd definitely want to be wearing wrist guards as suggested by @shponglefan.

Then again, I've never skateboarded, but I enjoy inline skating (not that I'm much good at it, hence the wrist guards). In any case, upvote to the video and comments all around for the neat discussion!

They also seem to need a braking system that brakes the board ever so slightly whenever a sudden asymmetric shock is applied to the weels, it would have prevented a few of these, of cause that would also have caused a lot more fails, but at least those would be head first which makes it much more interesting to watch.

lesson learnt from this video: skateboards need slightly flared / squared side edges.
