Simpsons Soccer

Length: 38 seconds.

Low-scoring and ties!

I always find it funny, that americans, who have baseball and american "football" feel like they can make fun of football for being boring.

Let's see... A baseball game lasts about 2 and a half hours, and the action lasts about 30 seconds, every few minutes.

American "Football" not only had the fucking nerve to make use of the word "football" when it fact it should be named "handball" or something. AND... the action lasts maybe 20 seconds, and stops every couple of minutes, for a period of a couple of minutes more.

Don't get me wrong, I hate football (the real kind)...

Easy now... it's just the Simpsons...And yet, I find it highly amusing that they make fun of ties and people were so happy that the USA tied this past week... wtf kind of game makes it a good thing to tie?

@ponceleon: As an American that thinks soccer (or futbol, but definitely not football) is boring and that ties are dumb: I'm happy we tied, because it is hilarious how bent out of shape the Internet-Brits got about it. Or maybe they were just still angry about Obama "badmouthing" BP. There's a lot of that out there, too. Regardless, so funny!

Most Americans feel like they can make fun of everything,

That's why I don't like non-American football/soccer, golf, baseball/softball, etc. I do like NBA/professional basketball (dang Lakers, come on and get your acts together and beat CULTics).

you aren't real familiar with baseball, are you?

Or are you just over-dramaticizing to make your point?

Either way, baseball is a continuous stream of "excitement" except for between innings when the fielders change.
Game starts, pitcher pitches, batter can do 4 things, Fly out, strike out, get on base, or the least "exciting" of which, walk.

Once the runner is safe, ball goes back to the pitcher and starts over again. maximum amount of time nothing happens during an inning (barring time outs) Roughly, 20 seconds, with about 2-3 minutes between innings.

I'm not saying it's the most exciting sport in the world, but it's not nearly as dreary as you made it out to be.

I could make the generalization that soccer is all just two teams running around like a bunch of idiots, and making really bad falls every now and again to try for a penalty.

I'd be wrong, and we know it, but it's the same thing you did.

my god are you watching baseball on tivo with fastforward?! 2 and a half hours?! not in this universe. 4-4:30 is the norm.

with football(the real one) you get 2 halves, 45min of nonstop gameplay.
how the fuck can anybody call that boring?!
watching somebody polish their bat for 5min before taking 1 swing is not boring!? stopping a game so that a team of hulks can pat each other on the butts before they play for 5sec is not boring?!

anybody who thinks that baseball or american eggball are more exciting than football are crazy.

and don't get me started on circle racing, aka nascar. at least formula1 changes things up a bit with left AND right turns.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, In 2004, the average length of a National League game was 2:47:20, compared to 2:46:55 in the American League.

Good try though.

Also.. just @mxxcon

just, so we're clear, because I highly doubt you watch baseball at all, I will re-state that there isn't a whole lot of standing around.

People don't stand there and hold up the game while they warm up, that's what the batter-on-deck system is for, so when one batter has hit/walked/struck out, the next one can just walk up and take his place at home plate. There's roughly 1-2 minutes between innings, except for the 7th inning stretch when they usually bring out some form of pep squad, but on the whole, baseball has little to no down time other then time outs, which in the long run probably spells out less time lost then a soccer game because of the cards/penalties/free throws/penalty kicks, etc.

Batter is up to bat, pitcher pitches, the MOST pitches one batter can ever take is 6. All the while, there's bases potentially being stolen, and the pitcher continues to throw, with maybe 20 seconds of transition while the next batter steps up to the plate.

20 seconds of transition? time between each pitch for the same player is longer than 20sec.
any game that doesn't use 'dirty time' is a snoozefest...short of hockey

Deanosays...

Isn't there another clip where they kick off and the crowd becomes incredibly bored as the teams pass it around aimlessly?

Most of the current games in the World Cup have been like that - unfortunately. But that's a lot to do with them being early group games featuring underwhelming sides.

Still the cultural difference between the U.S.A and the rest of the world is fascinating. Regular scoring of some sort is very important for the former while the ebb and flow of a football (aka soccer apparently) match is appreciated in other respects as well - skill, commitment and style.

I think we can all agree that watching sports on television is completely different than watching sports live at the venue it is being held. To go even further I will say that not ALL sports translate well to being viewed on a television. There is something about being in an atmosphere among fans that makes the entire experience electric, which is probably why we always invite friends to watch games if we ever watch them at home, or go to a sports bar(to get a similar feeling of togetherness).

Anyway, all this constant bickering about sports is pointless because sports is just entertainment, and everyone certainly does NOT have the same taste in entertainment.

TL:DR - Stop bickering about non-important topics.

Er.. we did?

I can say as a brit that doesn't give two shits about football that literally every american friend i had came to me going "LOLOLOL HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES" or something equally ludicrous. Nevermind that they were so excited about a draw from a keeping error, but it seems to me a hell of a thing to have absolutely no interest in something for many many years and then suddenly scream derision towards someone because you tasted a degree of percieved success.

Anyway, i'd much prefer you to truthfully say that "some british people you know/saw/read about on the internet" got bent out of shape. And i'll truthfully say that 100% of american people i know on the internet in some way attempted to mock me or irritate me by gloating over a draw.

The day i do the same to you, you can claim the moral highground, until then i don't think you should be starting much of a witch hunt regarding "acting up over nothing"

Sweden-Paraguay 2006 was one of the most awesome sports experiences in my life, and that game ended 1-0, and it's a fun game to look into even though it's not really relevant to this world cup.

I feel sorry for people who can't enjoy a game where the players don't score a goal every other minute, because football to me is highly enjoyable for the strategy involved, the individual players' skill and the magnificent plays that are preformed in each game. To dismiss it as an exercise in boredom is doing yourself a disservice. Not that I think this video does that, because I don't. Instead, it does seem like the video makes fun of American preconceptions of the game.

maatcsays...

Here is a danish report on the game.
First minute is about Germany scoring, the second minute has footage of the passing around. There is also an image of the rankings in that group, which explains why a narrow win was enough to advance for the germans and keep austria in the tournament.

Man, I'd love to see the highlight reel from that game! Or lowlight, I guess.
